A.I.R?
« on: July 08, 2007, 10:08:50 AM »
Hey everone, I am new to this site as of today and have a question about the A.I.R system. i have a 1987 Sierra 1500 w/ 350 TBI and i wanted to know if it is ok for me to take it out? I have put an Edelbrock intake on it and a dual exhaust and have gotten  a sticker with flying colors. I know that it still goes into my manifolds, but im planning on getting headers. Any information would help.
Thanks, Kyle

If you are wondering if it will still run if you remove it yes.  You MUST get rid of the open ports on the manifolds or it will not run correctly.

If you are wondering if you can remove it and still pass inspection, I would say you will have to check with the local testing facility.  Many places require it to be present if the vehicle came with it.

How would they know if it came with one? Are there some trucks that do and some that dont?

I don't have an answer but boy am I glad there isn't emmissions testing here in IL or none of my vehicles would pass except my 07 sierra.

Ditch the AIR system. The only way they can tell what the truck had is by the VECI label so if you are that concerned with it get a VECI label for your truck without AIR and stick it on there.

The VECI (vehicle emissions control information) label is typically on the radiator support when you open the hood except for 73 models and some others I believe it was on the air cleaner. Not positive what other years but I replaced mine on my truck just because it was worn out. Each state is different so I couldn't tell you whether or not they check or just give you a tail pipe test or dyno simulation...
