External coolant bypass vortec head's & block
« on: April 20, 2018, 06:42:44 PM »
Vortec head specific question. I started to look into the plumbing for my build, specifically external coolant bypass. The vortec head's don't have a hole like most 1st Gen head's have that allow coolant to bypass internally.  My new intake (edelbrock7116) has provisions for an external bypass and it says to go from the intake to a opening on the passenger side if the vortec water pump . Now I'm not running a vortec water pump l, I am running a clockwise rotation water pump. Does anyone have experience on where I run my hose from the intake? Pics preferably.

Perfect, My next question is I have two hoses. One goes to the passenger side intake and the other goes to the top of the water pump you have the bypass connected to.

pictured in link post #5 do i "Tee" both of them into that single port?

I assume you mean for the heater core? Do you not have the port on your radiator?

On my '75 SBC, the hose connected to the fitting on the passenger side of the intake manifold supplies water to the heater, and the return line from the heater runs back to the fitting on the radiator.   With the engine running and the radiator cap off you definitely see the gush of water coming in from that heater return hose.

I have a Stewart high flow water pump and it has a threaded fitting on top of the housing (for a heater hose?).  However, I didn't need to use it, so I just screwed in a pipe plug.

My current setup has one hose going to the top of the water pump and another hose going into the top of the intake. Looks like ill be using the bypass at the front of the intake to the top of the water pump and then one hose to top of intake and the other into the top passenger side of the radiator just below the radiator cap.

Thanks

It's not a straight shot. You need a molded hose or one of those flex hoses etc
