Fear and panic. It's out of control. No matter what anyone tells you, it's really just another version of the flu. And unless you have a compromised immune system, your body will fight it off or not even be affected by it. It's not a zombie apocalypse, just the flu. The only way to avoid it is to stay indoors and hide from the world, because if you step outside and your neighbor sneezes the wind will carry the germs over to you and you will be exposed. Every year you try to avoid the common cold and the flu by washing your hands and not having physical contact with people, and every year you either get a cold/flu or your body just fights it off. It's not the plague, just the flu. Here is a good article.

A little bit of good news: Its been reported China has not had a case in 24 hrs. Is that the truth, i hope so.

It is encouraging to see our president and the CV task force make daily updates. Massive plans are being made daily in so many areas. However, i feel like not watching the news or hearing the radio for two weeks, sick of the added hype and fear. Sick of watching the stock market plunge into the abyss. But, this too shall pass.

ps. mr diesel, that is a great article.

I am sharing this post because I found the explanation helpful and thought maybe others would too!
Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...
It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.
Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..
H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..
That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.
We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.
Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...
And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.
Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.
#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

Breaking news:

Hydrocloroquine, a malaria drug from 1940's has been tested by a French lab, peer reviewed and found to be efficacious in treating Covid-19.

"100% of patients, after 6 days were 'virologically cured"

i think its pretty stupid when "everyone" has off and acts like theyre on vacations and it takes the governors to close the beaches like they had to do in Florida and now in Delaware. traffic was crazy the other day when i was trying to leave work. not to mention we now have city folk invading our country lives just to get out of the city and they bring everything with them like the virus and city mentality

Yup.

People hoarding and not being considerate of others.  Guns and ammo sales rocketing.  Our own Media fanning the flames of fear and panic.

For those of you in full social distancing mode right now, here are some interesting articles and facts that provide some perspective:

Total U.S. deaths attributed to the China virus as of March 20th: 201
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1101932/coronavirus-covid19-cases-and-deaths-number-us-americans/
Keep in mind this latest China virus started back in 2019, so it has actually been in existence for months now. It is also no coincidence that it is occurring during the same time of year as the flu, given that its cause and behavior is very similar to the flu. Treatment for it is exactly the same as the flu too (except for the latest experimental use of Hydrocloroquine).

Total U.S. deaths attributed to the flu during the 2018-2019 flu season: 34,200
Total U.S. deaths attributed to the flu during the 2017-2018 flu season: 61,000  (which was classified as an epidemic)
https://www.health.com/condition/cold-flu-sinus/how-many-people-die-of-the-flu-every-year
I don't remember people panicking and storming the toilet paper shelves back in 2018. I don't remember anyone warning me to stay indoors and avoid groups larger than 10 people. Maybe I should have been panicking back then and just didn't. Looking back on it now I don't understand how I remained so calm given the epidemic proportions. Maybe it had something to do with the fact this actually happens every year.
The above article has a great quote from a doctor:
Quote
The fact that people are more concerned about COVID-19 than the flu virus is no surprise, says Dr. Adalja. “Anytime there is a new emerging infectious disease that is shrouded in mystery with a lot of unknowns, it captivates people in a way that a regular virus that people deal with on a yearly basis won’t,” he says.

Yet they announced another 150 US deaths overnight. I don't believe any of the media sources and data statistics since they can't capture the true picture of what is happening. Let's face it, there isn't enough infrastructure around adequately testing or treating this. I'm sure plenty of people have had it, have it or already died from it, none of which is recorded in stats.

People don't understand exponential growth, it is true!  The fact that we don't have resources in place to care for the rapid growth is what is causing the issue.

NY Metro is coming apart at the seams. Yet they are still holding "coronavirus parties", weddings and such. AND....many of these NY'ers are then going to their second homes in upper VT, NH and ME. A friend up there who delivers mail saw a large sign and it stated "Flatties go home. " I dont blame them for not wanting the careless NY'ers in their small towns.
