Choke light but choke working
« on: August 10, 2017, 01:13:51 PM »
85 Suburban, 454 quadrajet
I have a choke light, been on since I bought it a month ago
No problems running or starting, choke appears to work properly, and by that I mean that after it starts and runs for a minute it drops down and idles at a lower rpm. All wiring appears to be properly connected.
I'm getting 12v at the OPS on the front driver side of the block but not getting voltage at the choke on the carb. Bad OPS?

So turns out I am getting voltage to my choke with the OPS plugged in, I wasn't getting a good ground when metering it.

What are some other causes for getting a choke light?

What are some other causes for getting a choke light?

Does the truck have gauges or an idiot light cluster?  Will the Choke light extinguish when unplugging the OPS?

It has gauges, the voltmeter and oil pressure gauge currently don't work, I have yet to tear the dash apart to see what's going on behind it. PO added a trailer brake and air compressor, so there's a bunch of extra wires down by fuse panel but everything seems fine under there.

Choke light never goes out, never flutters

Are you sure you're unplugging the correct OPS for the choke - with a gauge type cluster there are two?  The choke OPS has two prongs with three wires connected - pink/white, dark blue and light blue.  Unplugging the OPS should cause the choke light to go out.  If it doesn't, trace and check the dark blue wire (circuit 931) for an inadvertent ground somewhere between the OPS and the instrument cluster.  In addition, make sure nothing is touching and grounding the I/P circuit board from behind the dash.
