86 K10 steering grinding
« on: November 09, 2017, 07:21:06 AM »
Just throwing this out there to see if anyone has any advice on the situation before I go tearing into things.  I have some very annoying (to me it's like nails on a chalkboard, although that's not exactly what the sound is like) sound coming from inside the cab in the steering column somewhere, when turning.  It's worse sometimes than other times.  Any advice or tips?  Thanks in advance guys.

Is it a tilt column?

Here is a link to an excellent write up on the service of the column to give you an idea of what your getting into.

Due to the age of the vehicle, it could be just about anything. I recently began removing a column from one of my parts trucks and found the lower bearing gone and the shaft just flopping, I left it in the truck, if I need one in the future, I'll just pick up a used one.
