The missus bought me a truck
« on: June 19, 2018, 11:29:22 AM »
I got a truck for my birthday.  She's a 1974 Chevy Cheyenne Super.  She's a project truck, run's great but needs a lot of "other" work.  I've already replaced the dry rotted wheels and the fuel line between the Carb and Fuel Pump.  The tank has rust so that's next on my list, and I'm thinking about moving/altering the filler neck so that I can fill up like a normal person (Any helpful advice welcome here).  None of the gauges in the dash work.  Nor does the radio.  The dash pad is all buggered up.  The seats need new upholstery but are good otherwise.  Steering wheel is covered in some kind of goop that I'm afraid to touch.  There's a lot of body rust, both doors, the bed, rear wheel housings, between the door and front wheels, all the normal spots.  And about 80% of the rest of the truck has surface rust.  I am an average shade tree mechanic.  I can weld (kinda).  I like to tinker.

I like to search for answers before I post.  I'll try not to be annoying.

Regards
Dale

Welcome. You've got a good woman! What don't you like about the fuel filler? Wrong side? Start a thread in Members Rides. http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=32209.0  Here's the link to my daughter's truck. Has quite a few pics of repairing the floor, rocker, cab corner. If I can learn you can. The off the shelf primers and paint don't get hard like the professional stuff and gum up your sand paper. Drove me nuts until a friend enlightened me. The better products are so much easier to use. Have fun!

What don't you like about the fuel filler?

I don't like the long straight filler hose from the neck to the tank.  It gives me grief every time I try to fill up.  I believe the problem is that the filler hose fills up with gas and triggers the auto shutoff feature of the pump before any fuel flows into the tank.  I have to run the pump super slow and angle it at a weird angle.  Also, I don't like that I can't get a good seal between the vapor seal and the side of the truck.  This causes the trigger on the pump handle to not engage.  It's a exercise in patients every fill up.  I don't think the truck's had a full tank yet.  I've been doing some research and it looks like a relatively common problem in California and I'm exploring options.  I'll start a thread if needed but I'm not there yet.

Dale

I'm going to take her out this weekend for a "photo shoot" but this is what I've got for now.  Feel free to note the different size and type of wheels.  That's been remedied already.  The next project will be quite a bit more involved (with a blazer tank mod and a filler cap behind the tail light.)  Then some under hood repairs/upgrades....

This is the worst of the rust.
