DD 4-53t
« on: February 11, 2016, 07:12:00 PM »
I've heard of people putting the Detroit 453s in pickups and was curious if anyone has ever seen one or done the conversion. If so what would be involved? Engine mounts would be a given. But I wasn't sure about clearances, body work or how easy it would be to get a hold of one.

That is a great video. Why did they not just do that from the factory. And I think I know where my money will disappear to once I'm out of school and have a full time job.

They had the 4-53 in the bread trucks in the 70's but they are underpowered and very polluting.  My buddy has a 3-53 in a 67 C20 that was a mill truck.  Top speed was maybe 45 the way it was geared.

Your best bet is to get a bread truck as a donor. You need the engine, as well as trans adapter as the bolt pattern is different.
Personally, I would just get a 6.2 rig. The only benefit of a 4BT is mileage, possibly power. A turbo'd 6.2 would likely have as much, or more power.

Brings back memories.  Detroits sure have a distinctive sound.   8)
