Quadrajet electric choke no voltage
« on: February 19, 2017, 03:28:50 PM »
Hello all,
I am experiencing issues with my electric choke on my 1984 3/4 ton 4x4 suburban. I have never seen a choke light light up on my dash in any instance. There is no voltage at the choke regardless of key position. When I look at the fuse panel there is a spot labeled for the choke at the top left of the fuse block but there is no fuse in there and I cannot see any brass contacts inside the spot for said fuse... I have tried to locate the oil pressure sending unit. It was not by the oil filter. I did locate something behind the distributor but it does not look like the pictures others have posted. Oil pressure does register on the dash. I have read all the posts I could find involving the stock electric choke. I appologize if I am missing anything that was obvious. It does appear that the last four inches of the choke wire coming out of the harness has been repaired. It disappears from there into the wire loom. Attached is a picture of what I think is the sending unit for the oil pressure. It does look a bit different from the posted pictures i have seen though. Thank you for your patience and time! 84Burban

You need to check for voltage with the engine running. Start by doing that.

Good morning!
There is zero voltage at the choke when the engine is running. sorry for not mentioning that first off. There is a sharpie cap inserted in the choke to keep it open heh heh...  :o thank you for responding!

Take a better look at the fuse block. There should definitely be a choke fuse.

Thank you, I did put a fuse in the choke slot. No choke light or voltage at the choke still.

Are you sure you are checking the correct fuse and for good measure just test all of your fuses with a test light.

Verify the oil pressure switch is connected by the distributor.

Yes the top left of the fuse block has a place and a arrow pointing to the choke slot but there are no brass contacts to accommodate the fuse. There are other spots where there are labeled slots but no contacts. I did test the other fuses (wipers etc...)with a tester and they lit up. There is something on the drivers side of the distributor that looks similar to a fuel filter. Just the shape. It has one wire coming out of the top that is connected. The bottom has a fitting that appears to be attached to the manifold. There is oil pressure registering on the dash gauge. It seems to be working correctly as it ramps up upon starting.

The other confusing thing is that there is a 20 amp fuse port labeled "gauges/idle" i have been informed that it is connected to seatbelt warning buzzer, instrument cluster, low coolant lamp, and water in fuel lamp(diesel) when that fuse blows the truck will not run for longer that a few seconds and will stall when it is put into gear. That does not sound like any of those things associated with that fuse.?

Are you the original owner?  Has this truck been repowered at some point in its life?  Post a clear pic of the VECI label located on the radiator support.

You have gauges or idiot lights?

I am not the original owner. I bought it two years ago. It has been my daily driver since then. I am not sure if it has ever had a engine swap. i suppose it is possible that it was swapped out because of the aftermarket headers.

Stock gauges in dash cluster that register op as it ramps up

Your truck may be equipped with a choke relay instead of an oil pressure switch then. When the engine is running it supplies current to the choke heater through the relay. One of my old trucks was setup this way too. I don't see that depicted in the diagrams I have but I'm fairly certain mine was also an 84 equipped as such. I'll look around and see what I can find
