« on: July 12, 2007, 10:26:24 PM »
my speedometer gauge is off on my 83 gmc high sierra, it says im going 35 mph when im really goin 50. Im not sure but i think my fuel gauge is off too, i got 1/4 tank with $20. How do i fix this because i really dont want to get a ticket or look like a fool when my truck stalls.

For the speedo, you need to swap the gears in the trans.  They should stil be availible from GM.  Check this article on how: http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/drivetrain/spdgears.htm

As for the tank, it only holds 16 gallons on a SWB. $20 @ 3$ a gallon = 6.6g = ~1/3.

Does it appear to work when you put more in it?  GM fuel gauges lack in the complete accuracy in the full sweep.

I agree the fuel gauges can be off either way. I have one that runs out at 1/8 of a tank and have another you can drive 40 miles after it hits empty.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I would say the wheel and tire combo has a lot to do with your speedometer being off. 1/4 of a tank with $20 worth of gas if you fill up when just about empty sounds pretty close.

ok i filled it up today and the gas guage does not even go pass 1/4 tank. Do yall think it could be the gauge or the fuel pump or what?
