Need a new tranny... any ideas?
« on: July 30, 2008, 12:01:07 AM »
Hi guys, im new to the site and was wondering if i could get some advice on a new trans for my 84 2wd 1/2 ton gmc on 31's. Its got a new 350 crate thats about to be pushin about 450hp. I currently have a muncie 3 speed (was on the column, but now on the floor). I am having trouble with putting the power to the ground. I have been looking into a new 5 or 6 speed to put into it for a while now. Id like to have a quick truck on the street, but able to pull a descent size trailer every once in a while. I saw that tremec makes a 5 speed kit for around $3400, but read some threads about it not holding up to the weight of a full size truck. Would like to go all out with a 6 speed. Any help with what i should go with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.
Dave

Have you given any thought to making it an automatic?

I believe you would be fine with either the TREMEC TKO (5 speed) or the T56 (6 speed)

Keisler also has kits with the TKO 500, 600 or the T56. (you have to chose street rod application:

If you want something other than TREMEC Richmond Gear makes a 5 and 6 speed also.  The use the same stuff your 3 speed does (although if you really expect 450hp, I would recommend getting a blowproof housing)

Keep in mind if you get a T56 and retro it to your existing Gen I SBC, there is going to be some hidden "gotchas" that you don't realize.  I posted this before so you can search on it, but it is gonna be cheaper going with a kit if you are wanting a T56.

So i am leaning for the 6 speed richmond, I really dont need a double OD. How much of a pain is swaping it out with the old three speed? Would i have to get a new bellhousing, clutch and flywheel? Does the cross member get relocated, or is a new one required? Thanks for everyone's help

Richmond you don't "have" to get a new bell housing, but as I said above, I would get a blow proof if you plan on abusing it.
It will require a new clutch assembly and in relation to a 3 speed the transmission mount will need to be moved back.
