Rethinking the Header thing.

I was thinking about putting long tube headers on to help with milage and power.
I went to the Summit Racing store amd they were setting out a new shipment of demo returns.
I found a set of longs for $60. (Normally 190) Brand new condition.
The ends are about 2-3/4" or 3". From my understanding in chatting with a Summit rep, that diameter needs to be continued all the way back. Because reducing it down to 2-1/4" would defeat the purpose. And that makes sense.
I would like to improve mileage if possible but and entirely new dual exhaust system is sorta self defeating.

I would like to see comments from those who have "been there -n- done that

I personally like headers, though many don't.  Summit guy is right about the exhaust diameter, choking it down takes away the benefits, you want it free-flowing as possible.  If I were to keep 2-1/4", I wouldn't bother with the headers though.

I am going with headers on my truck after the engine build. I found a set I like:
Hedman 304 Stainless Steel Headers 62093, they are coated in Black.

Lots more questions need to be answered, but...
What kind of engine are we talking about here? What is the operating range of the valvetrain?  What kind of gearing and tiresize? 
Generally 2.25" dual exhaust is good for a 350hp motor, 2.5" is 500hp.  Unless you are making above 350hp there is no reason to buy a new exhaust IMO.

If you get headers, don't buy cheap ones that will end up leaking on you, and then factor if headers are worth the 1-2mpg you may gain?
What kind of MPG are you getting now?

Honestly, forget about the MPG that may/may not increase, it won't.  Our trucks aren't built for MPG, but for Smiles Per Gallon.
