Title: crankshaft selection ?
Post by: 1979mmx350 on November 25, 2015, 09:24:16 PM
Threw a rod or two so Im beginning my search for a replacement crank and full rod setup. Really just looking for suggestions and any other info you guys might have to offer. So far, I've narrowed it down to Eagle Specialty and this Scat crankshafts as they are fairly cheap. No leads on rods, but I'm open to advice there.

Note: Not really looking to stroke or destroke my motor. I found this one and was wondering if anyone's ran it before.

And an alt. from Eagle Specialty:

Might check on some of the go-fast forums. Eagle has sort of lost its reputation in the last few years.

If you threw a rod or two you probably need a new block as well.

There's a story here...!    How did it happen?   :o

In my DD I use a forged Scat crank and H-beam rods nestled in Clevite TriArmor coated H-Series rod and main bearings connected to forged Wiseco pistons, all supported by splayed steel four-bolt mains.  Oil pump pushes 90 PSI of Mobil 1 5w-50.  Yet, I rarely twist over 5 grand....

What's the intended future (ab)use for your truck?

I concur.  There's a very high probability the block is dead.   :(

I have no tach and was gunning it up a slight incline in third as I was coming up to an overpass. I stopped at a light right before the cross way and started hearing a knock once I threw it in gear and began accelerating again. Ended up having to limp her home, but she made it.

As for intended use? Haul  and pull some major burnouts.

So you didn't actually toss a rod.  If you're sure it's coming from the rotating assembly, drop the pan and take a careful look.  Did it lose oil pressure?

It sounds like there's a ton of crap bouncing around in the oil pan which lead me to believe I might be dealing with some type of bearing issue. Like everything blew apart at what was probably somewhere between 6500 and 7000 rpm.

Better take a look inside before you commit to anything.  Sounds like you might be better off with a complete engine.

Yeah. New GM replacement crate engines with warranty are very cheap right now.

If I simply went for a new block/pistons and swapped everything else would I have a decent running motor? Where else might my motor have wear/damage?
