4-speed OD swap for 3-speed
« on: September 28, 2005, 12:38:00 AM »
I have a 1973 C10 with a 250-6, 3-speed manual gearbox and a 3.73 final drive.

I want to bolt in a 4-speed with OD to get better highway mileage and have heard that 1981-86 Chevy C-10s had this type of setup.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me? I really appreciate it.

Pt

Some of them had the transmission, but they weren't very popular as far as options go, they were mainly behind diesels and 305's.  They don't like being abused either, and have a rep of being a poor transmission.  There are a number of people that are using them though.  The are the same transmission Dodge used in their pickups for the same years.  They would be the A883's or something like that.

Thanks Chris,

I have heard of the New Process A833. Supposedly it was also built for 1981-86 GM trucks and called a GM MY-6. A 4- speed manual, side loaded shifter transmission. Any other info anyone has would be great.

Thanks, Pt

You are correct the trans is the New Process A833.  I currently have this trans in my 87 behind a 350.  This trans was used in Dodge cars and trucks as well as Chevy/GMC trucks.  While it is not a heavy duty trans like the NP465, I have had no problems with it.  I pull a 5000# camper.  I would suggest that if you get one that has not been rebuilt, have it rebuilt before you install it.  The 4 gear bearings tend to howl if they are original.
