Removing manual window regulators
« on: May 18, 2012, 10:56:43 AM »
Okay  my buddy is scrapping his truck tomorrow. My brother wants to swap out door glass and window regulators because from years of vice grips, his crank splines are stripped out. How do you remove the manual regulators and glass? I read online that your aupposed to roll the window all the way up and secure it, unbolt the 4 bolts for the regulator, then it says to slide the regulator rearward to get the rollers out of the track. But,.i can move the regulator rearward because of the crank stub coming through the door. Can you guys help me out?

There is suppose to be 1 more bolt kinda hidden that you are suppose to reach in behind the regulator and get off, at least that is what I remember from doing it a few years ago.
I have to do it again hear soon, but that does not help you right now.

remove the vent window, roll the window down, slide it out of the tracks and remove the 4 bolts holding the regulator to the shell.

Well, I figured it out with a little help from my dad. With the vent window in, roll the window all the way up and wedge it so it stays up. Unbolt the 4 bolts on the regulator and then roll the window down a little, but dont let the window move. The regulator will rotate and slide on the tracks. Roll it down enough that the regulator gear clears the front track. Then push the regulator shaft in the hole. Reach in and pull the whole assembly rearward until the roller comes out of the sash channel. Then slide the regulator for the roller to line up with the open spot on the window track and pull the roller out. Scissor the regulator arms closed and pull it out of the access whole in the door. Remove the wedge from the window, lower the window and rotate it counter clockwise from yhe inside of the truck 90°. Then lift the window straight up and out of the door from the outside. Reverse procedure to reinstall.

About 15-20 minutes to figure out, then about 7-10 minutes to repeat

If the truck was getting scrapped, a set of torches or a sawzall would have made getting it out a piece of cake ;)
