BlueCollarRon's 1982 GMC Sierra Classic
« on: December 29, 2008, 05:38:40 PM »
Hello everyone!  I have been on the look out for a good GMC/Chevy Truck site, hopefully this is it!

I bought this truck about 2 months ago for $1,700. It is a 1982 GMC 4x4 Single Cab Sierra Classic 1/2 ton made in Canada. Out of the factory the truck had a 305eng with a 700r tranny. Now, a 350 with 350.

Not much to say, but she is a bad Truck, real torquey!  I have straight pipes that dump off before the rear axle.  Got about a 4in lift, 33in tires.  The only problem I have with it is I have a crack on one of my starter bolt holes, I have other threads going about that, its been an on going problem.

Thanks for checking it out!

Welcome from West Texas. Looks pretty cool. I had a block crack at one of the starter bolt holes. put antiseize on a bolt, put the bolt in, and had a welder friend weld the crack up. ( He used some type of special rod for cast iron). Pulled the bolt out, and never had another problem.

Cool man, I think I may end up doing something similar.  First I will try simple jb weld after grinding fresh the crack.  If that doesnt work I will tack weld a bolt in the hole.

At least it came from North America and not Asia.  I already have a 3/4 or full ton front/rear end that I plan on swapping with my 1/2 ton in a few months.  I have not made up my mind yet on the size of Super Swampers I want to buy, I'm thinking 36' . Here in Fairbanks Alaska, big trucks are really common, and so are hicks and mud.   ;D

Its been a while from my last update.

The starter problem was fixed with a starter brace.
We found a stripped out power steering bolt, and a block hole was stripped out that holds the torque bar and the bell housing driver-side.

Tuesday morning driving to work my crankshaft busted  ??? ! Bad rebuild I guess, we will find out what happened as soon as we can get it in the shop in the coming week.

Not a bad deal for $200 I think.

I think it came out of an early 80s blazer, should work perfect for my truck.  Ill take lots of pictures!
Eventually we will swap out running gears!

Good luck, man.  I'm glad you've got them "cold weather genes".  My "southern" genes would freeze up where you are.  I'd likely be reading books and watchin' tv all winter, instead of working on my truck.   :)

Thanks guys, the truck always gets peoples attention when driving in town.  The pictures of that frozen motor up top is a 350 that I can have for $200.  It supposedly ran in the last year, the guy just had a lot of money to drop a new motor in.

I am thinking about dropping in that 350 or a 400 sitting in a 79' out in the yard.  What do you guys think, a bored out 350, bored out 400, or dont bore either one?  I plan to do some serious mudding, so a bored out 350 really has my attention.  I am knew to this so I am looking for a lot of information.

Thanks!

I'd use the 400 *if* the motor's in decent shape. If you run 9-9.5:1 compression with a decent cam and good heads, 400 horses at the crank is easy--not to mention better torque than a 350.
