rubber around hinges

hey guys i have the the whole front end ripped apart on my truck and im smoothing out the firewall. anyway you no the rubber around the hinges whats the point of it? it seems like it just makes everything rust under the rubber also I would like to take it off for a cleaner look. Thanks for your opinions marc

Helps keep seal the cowl from water.
