Title: 89 Crew Cab Chevy k20 4x4 twin turbo Cummins swap Tons of Pics!
Post by: eric28miller on March 04, 2013, 10:16:01 AM
Hey everybody, my name is Eric Miller from Cascade, Iowa. I'm 24 and I farm and rebuild wrecked heavy equipment.  I started this build 2 years ago on limited spare time & tools. Goal is building the ultimate every day work truck / weekend warrior. This is my first truck and first build. Figured i better do it now before I start a family. I hope to have the truck done before my wedding this coming August..

I first got the motor a few years back from a Case IH agriculture sprayer that i bought and stripped after it had been hit by a train. The sprayer flew 90 feet and amazingly the motor was fine, except for the oil pan, pickup tube, and injector lines.  You can see the article of the accident here: http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/3191126.html (http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/3191126.html)

I've been wanting to drop the motor into something for a long time. I finally bought a 6" lifted 84 crew cab chevy with the frame already shortened rust free box cab and 1990 suburban power doors and front clip and 468 big block. But i ran into a big problem.. The vin tag for the dash got lost because a new surburban dash was swapped in and the old one was cut out and, well, it disappeared... Lucky for me a guy in town was selling his 89 crew cab chevy with 45k original miles that he bought from the Arizona swat force. He removed the bombproof swat center room whatever you wanna call it and installed a flatbed. What's great is it's never seen salt so it's in fantastic condition, inside and out. I sold the bed for $2000 and the engine for $1500.

Compound turbo kit is a massive S474 over a phatshaft 62 from industrial injection with a 3 piece manifold. I went with this kit because it's supposed to , as they told me, spool well and it looks like it would fit perfect in the c/k body with the large turbo up in front rather then down under the smaller turbo.

The whole truck will be painted chevy volt pearl white. I painted the engine red because it's cummins national color and it came from a CaseIH.  Not to mention it just looks awsome! I picked up the p-pump from a pullin truck that was gettin upgraded to a 13mm, so it already has all the goodies. The original AG pump wouldn't work because it didn't have an automotive governor. The old lines were mangled so i got .093 stainless lines to give it some lope. The injectors are SAC 7x14's should be plenty to fuel the turbos. I'm building an adjuster to connect to the manual fuel plate so i can adjust it on the fly inside the truck. This should help keep it streetable since it will be my everyday driver. I put an adjustable timing gear on the injection pump to help tune things in easier with a custom made billet cover.
I polished all the chrome work myself, just took it to a guy i know to have it all dipped. It's very cheap if its prepped and ready to be plated. The clutch is a south bend twin disk which will be bolted to the dodge nv4500 with a billet 1 3/8"'s billet input shaft and a 1st gen reman dodge 205 bored out with extreme duty bearings and chevy outputs.
As for the internals the cylinders have been bored 40 over and fitted with oversized low compression marine pistons. All new bottom end bearings and main and rods bolted together with ARP bolts and studs held together with a girdle. I sent the head out for fire ringing, 60lbs valve springs and titanium retainers and keepers.

Sorry all the pics are out of order but Photobucket's new site won't let me arrange them correctly...

Thanks! I hope it's worth all the work when it's done.

Sharp rig!  That's a baddazz pic with the claw in the backround!

Been awhile since my last post.. I've been busy working on converting the old barn full of junk into another shop. It's mostly done now, just moved the truck in over the weekend, i forgot how many parts i've accumulated!!

Here's a before:

lol Thanks Rick!
It's not much but here's an update.. Been REALLY really busy getting ready for planting season.  Torque Fest is finally over so my painter is finally starting on the cab, he thinks he'll be shootin paint in 2 weeks.. but pry more like a month. I told him my due date is June 25th when I want to pull my camper up to Country Fest in Wisconsin.

I finally got my custom power steering lines back! Took them 2 months to get them done so they only charged half price  :D

Absolutely awesome!

I see some improvements (hitch) for sled pulling... where do you live?

Not aiming to critique but do you have any rubber isolation on the exhaust connections at the frame? If not, there stands a chance of even more noticeable engine vibration.  Just something to think about.  Ignore if you covered that & I just missed it in the pics. :D

Seats = ford king ranch?? They look awesome! Could I trouble you for a shot of how much rear leg room there is?

What vehicle is that a-pillar gauge pod made for??

Are those n-fab step bars? If so, are the made for a 73-87 gm or did you retrofit them from a different model? Last I checked (been a while) they didn't have any this era CC trucks but I've always wanted a set for my 83 CC SB!

Anciousto see the continued progress!!!

Thanks SmokeShow, yea the exhaust is isolated, i never got any good pics of the leg room but i will when i get the truck back together, the gauge pod is just a universal that i heated and molded to the dash, n yup they're n-fab for a 07-12 chevy truck that i modified, they don't make them for any older trucks, but it was very easy to modify the brackets.

I finally have a good update for you guys, truck is finally getting some paint. Took awhile because the body shop switch everything over to water based Dupont paint plus my painter has been swamped with work. He was up til 3 AM last saturday getting these doors, fenders, and the interior painted.  He tweaked the original pearl quite a bit to give it a more brilliant white then before. The mailbox now looks dirty brownish yellow next to the new custom white pearl.  The last pic is a good comparison to my fiance's brand new summit white Chevy Cruze. She was very jealous : )  The pictures just don't do the paint justice!!!  I should be getting everything back this Sunday so i'll definitely be posting more pics as this thing comes together, or as my painter calls it, The Little White Giant.

I got the truck box and cab back last Tuesday, then I was off to Country Fest in Cadott, WI all weekend n just got back today. Saw A LOT of nice trucks up there which was torcher not being able to work on my project back home.. I plan on taking it up next year for sure.
After mike painted the box I had spray on bedliner done which turned out very nice.  Now 4th of July is here and a wedding only 1 month away there won't be much time for assembly..
I just upgraded my photobucket so i can keep the pics rolling in for you guys, you're gonna like these!

Thanks guys!
Got a LOT done tonight after work even though it was really hot today!
Painted some more parts black then cleaned, masked, and undercoated the cab.  Glad it's over with that undercoat is some messy stuff, now let's hope it dries in this humidity..

Dropped the cab on the other night.. but had to pull it back off right away... While i was rolling the frame it didn't feel right, something was binding, that's when i discovered the CV joint on the front driveshaft was bottoming out.  So now i have to install a clocking plate from offroad design to lessen the angle of the driveshaft. Plate should be here in a few days then hopefully the cab and box can go on for the FINAL time.  Here's some pics before i pulled the cab back off.

Soo i've been back at it. Frustrates me every time I start workin on it i have to do more modifications just for the part to fit. 1 step forward takes 2 steps backwards..
Got another load of painted parts in

Here's a few pics of the transfer case clocking plate installed. Worked perfectly except i had to notch out the crossmember, no biggie, long as the cv joint isn't binding.

The brake set up. Front and rear manual line locks instead of using the old e-brake system. And using Dot 5 brake fluid so it won't eat the paint. Supposed to work better than dot 3 but can't be used with abs.

Here's a closer look at the mirror mounts. I built them to be solid so the mirrors don't wiggle while driving and blur the vision. Drives me nuts when i can't see out of a mirror..

And the doors will get covered once they are finished.

So I now know that i for sure cannot tig weld. I'm not a bad self taught mig welder but tig welding is a whole nother story...

I decided to weld the stainless thru hauls on instead because the 0 rings kept leaking and i wanted to never worry about dropping the tanks again.

Tank on the left is a massacred stainless tig weld. Said screw this and went and bought a roll of stainless wire for the mig. Mig weld on the right.
Wish i would've done it to begin with...but thought, how hard can it be?...

I then coated the welds with liquid metal compound then sprayed over it with Leak Seal.
Here's a few pics with the 1 1/2" transfer hose installed.

I love the smoked tail lights! I thought i'd have to buy new ones cuz how scratched n faded they were but some smoke and clear coat did wonders. And in the light they look pretty bright yet, Plus i'll have 4 other led tail lights if they are too dark.

My painter used a smoke paint then multiple coats of clear coat.
Took a little break from the truck to work on some remodeling in the house.
Gonna try and set the body back on tomorrow

I do gotta say, that is going to be one sweet ride when you are done.  You shouldn't have to worry about another person around you having the same kind of truck.  Great job so far.

I think that you are making one huge mistake...It looks too good but has function to it all. So it's going to be hard to use it the way it's intended to. I would have such a hard time keeping it on the road and making any kind of mileage from either tank. I'm thinking I need something like this to maybe be able to take the whole family off road at the same time...Keep it up.

It may be just the redneck in me but This is by far my favorite build so far. I mean Twin Turbo LM7 are nice CAP, but ridiculous torque and go anywhere capability....oh yea. Not sure I can afford a diesel swap so the blown LS family will likely be my settlement.

lol! thanks. Actually a diesel swap is relatively inexpensive. It's when you start making a lot of horsepower that it can get expensive real quick as i found out. But then again i love the LS motors!! I built up an LS2 in my 05 gto in highschool, but decided to sell it before i did somthing stupid..

I know exactly what you mean...drove an '04 GTO LS1 for a while and it's definitely enough to get you in trouble without mods! Still got that LS2..I know a gut wanting one...MMMEEEEE!!!

I would love to do a diesel, and LOVE this build, but I have to many projects as it is..
BTW mine is a LQ4.  We have one that makes a respectable 700 lb/ft.  Not diesel territory, but enough traction is and issue.

I bought the car with a locked up motor from sucking up water and threw a new shortblock in it when i was 18. Broke 2 rods and bent 2 others. I gave it a stage 2 spec clutch, longtube ceramic headers straight into sidepipes, ls7 cam, k&n intake and custom diablosport tune. I sold it the next summer when gas was over 4 bucks a gallon!! I love love LOVED that car! I will own another one when i hit mid life crisis lol

ok i think i found a good deal, for my build. 2k for a 5.9 turbo to oil pan p style pump. and 2500 for the dodge nv4500 np205. still doing a bit of research, but the prices seam good on the 5.9. asked the guy if we could bolt a dodge bell housing/stuff to a gm nv4500 and he said theres no combo out there that you can just bolt to together and wave a magical wand over and it will work. i could help but laugh. but tonight i found you can infect use a gm nv4500 the 94-96 style i think. but either way i dont have one. now the down side.

apparently the 5.9 doesnt like to see 2k rpms much (mpg wise) but with 38's i should be around 1750 rpms going 65. this i think is doable. but the problem is with our 3+3 work horse we are making/building. wont have 38s she will have 31s and this will put her a 2k going only maybe 60. maybe we can find a way to squeeze 35s under her idk that will up her to 2k at 68. not meaning to hijack your tread, dont see enough here to start a new one. but i was wondering if you have any ideal what i could do?

I haven't hardly touched the truck.. I started the wiring nightmare and installed the shift knobs, that's it lol
I ordered an aftermarket cruise control kit and fuse panel for all the extra electronics.

Hey guys, apologies for the lack of quick responses to your questions.. Been very very busy... We just wrapped up harvest on Monday, then spent 2 days cleaning and moving equipment into storage, and THEN scurried to get 6000 ft of geo line in the ground as the frost was setting in..
(http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/y366/eric28miller/20131203_113233.jpg) (http://s1030.photobucket.com/user/eric28miller/media/20131203_113233.jpg.html)
Plus we"re going to nebraska tomorrow to look at a large lot of tornado damaged equipment to buy and now i'm building a house next summer..a new deadline to finish the truck. But i HAVE to finish it since i will need a truck to pick up supplies.
I'll try my hardest to post progress and answer questions for you guys. I appreciate all the positive comments they are very motivating.

I had some time yesterday to round up every single bolt that i have left and threw them all into a bucket with some industrial degreaser. Then cranked up the power washer to 210 degrees and boiled them for 10 minutes. After that i quickly dried them with a heat gun before rust set in and dumped black painted into the bucket, rolled it around for 10 more minutes and wa la, nice perdy bolts : )

Thanks Rick,
I don't think I could ever part with this truck with as much time i've invested and the sacrifices i've made to build it.. But ya never know everything has a price  ;)

Now I can get back to the truck.. I just finished a little side project before the snow fell. 08 mxz 800 i bought wrecked, needed an entire new front end. Goin on my first snowmobile trip up to northern Wisconsin in January.

So i finally got the mirrors mounted, i know a lot of you have been waiting to see what i did. Personally i'm very happy with how they turned out, i'm sure some people may disagree..  Maybe someday i'll do a custom one piece window but for now this will work for me. I first mounted the mirror to a stainless window replacement but it was too flimsy which would cause blurry vision on the road.  So I then cut out the window plate and welded another plate to the inner door to mount to. Its VERY solid now!  Replacing the rubber wasn't much fun, i'm still working on the other doors. Which by the way i just started the rear doors and they a pain in the rear! Welp here are some pics

I'm back! Left for a week snowmobiling up north then took off to the Dominican Republic for our honeymoon for 2 weeks! Made it back last week and have been scrambling since to get caught up. Finally had some time to work on the truck last few nights til midnight. I sure have missed working on it! Couldn't stop thinking bout what i was going to do when I got back haha

SmokeShow, the step bars I bought from GoRhino and they were the cheapest on Amazon.

Update: My painter Mike has been helping me in return for using my lift when he needs it. It's awesome having a friend that ACTUALLY knows what he's doing! Most of the guys i know can install some shiny rims and change their oil, that's about it...
The cowl and wipers are all together, tailgate and bumper installed, rear window is in, headache rack stacks and toolbox sitting in place but not bolted yet.

Nope motor is all stock ; )
so Mike n I were up to 3am bolting down the box, headache rack, stacks, and toolbox. Had to drill new holes for the box and add spacers until the body lines were perfectly square and of course it fought us every step of the way. Nothing has been easy on this truck..
heres a few pics:

They're just bushwacker flares, but i shortened them so i didn't have to cut out the fender well.

Gotta throw in a pic of the new 73-87chevytrucks calendar!

So I need some opinions from you guys, can't decide what to do with the front grille...
Do I keep it white with a black emblem or polsihed aluminum? Or a black grille with black, polished, or white emblem? oooor paint the upper and lower half of the white grille black  :-\

You could do an all chrome grille and headlight bezels and bow tie or just a chrome grille and bow tie to compliment those chrome stacks and headache rack in the bed.

Yea the chrome would like really good, i'm jus trying to be different since everyone has chrome grilles, i'm gonna try it though n see how it looks!
I was thinking of the black grille because of this truck on youtube that i'm obsessed with. I just love how it's all whited out then that black grille really jumps out like those tires lol This truck has been the inspiration of my white obsession:

Yea makes sense. I think chrome is good when used in moderation. Tons of chrome is tacky but just pipes, rack and grille would look clean. The black grille with chrome emblem does look pretty good, just a chrome middle piece with bow tie.

Where did you get the small rectangular sealed-beam conversion lamps?  I didn't think that anyone made them for the Chevy quad-beam.  They are smaller than the standard quad-beam, 100x165 mm (4x6) lamps.  They are I think the 92x150 mm lamps.

Also...did you modify those step-bars?  I think I saw that you used something like 2003 Chevy truck steps and made brackets to fit your truck, but I also seem to remember that the main tube is shaped differently?!

Thanks,

They are good high quality glass lamps I ordered online. I plan on converting to led or hid someday and these lamps allow you to.
I ordered the 2012 chevy crew cab shortbox bars from gorhino. All i had to do was bend the brackets back a bit to fit the contour of the rocker panel.

I need to get some pics up of my recent progress.. Was up til 2am last thursday then jumped in a van for 10 hours to nashville for the weekend.  Had an ok time, would have been a LOT better if i didn't come down with Bronchitis. At home still recovering today.. i'm hoping to be back to work tomorrow then i can get you guys some pics afterwards.

Last Thursday night Mike helped me finish up the doors, installed GTmat on the inside and outside panel of the doors and the 5way Pioneer 6x9 speakers. Then installed the JL Audio 10" shallow mount sub w/box and wired everything to a JL XD700 6 channel amp. I hooked up the radio temporarily on the floor since I don't have power to the dash yet. We took it for a test run and wow were we impressed! Very crisp sound, no distortion at all above 100db, and that little 10 really packs a punch and still fits behind the rear seat. Highly recommend this setup to others.

another update, got the brakes, clutch and power steering all hooked up. Found out my john deere baler cylinder was too slow for my steering so i had to break down and buy a psc cylinder.  Then took the truck for a short test drive up and down the road.  Found my hydro boost and power steering pump are leaking pretty bad.. Then my tire barely caught the lower bumper valance and broke it.. And i got an idler or something annoyingly squeaking, can hear it in the video.. But on the bright side she drove and rode really really nice. Felt like i was riding in a new f-150, think i'm really going to like those sulastic shackles. And i can't wait to have a leg like Barney Gorman from pushin that clutch ; )
Here's some pics of the little white giant soakin up some rays in the yard and a video at the end.
ps plantin season is starting so you won't be hearing much from me guys sorry..

So I keep it to myself lol, at least you have a lot of support on it haha, you have custom fabbed so much on that truck it's insane ,,, definitely post up some more updates , I'm curious to hear how it drives and rides... I bet you are nervous with all those mods I would be too! What's the aftermarket parts list on that cummins? Hp and tq numbers yet? This is a question you don't have to answer but what is the total cost for the build including everything ? Parts. Paint. Time etc I'm just curious... This is a over the top build... Very very cool truck Eric!

Got the gauges done yesterday! I had some custom overlays made to match the autometers, then painted the needles and trim to match. Turned out great i'm really happy with them.

whitegauges dot net made the overlays.
Been workin like crazy on the little white giant, finally took it on it's first voyage last night! Drove it to town, rode like a wet dream! Got to the bar and there was coolant leakin inside and outside, oil puked everywhere, and the shut off solenoid shorted out internally..
Everything was fine on the first little test spin but then again it never got real warm and rpms stayed pretty low.
Got her back to the shop last night and this morning i fixed most of the oil leaks, still have a few, and all the coolant leaks. Regular hose clamps are not strong enough for steel braided lines.
Took it back out for about half n hour today, rides like a half ton and steerings like a golf cart, but my left leg is going to be twice the size of my right! Gears are tricky to find, the new shift forks are pretty tight but float in and out pretty easy with no clutch.
I noticed boost would only climb to 20psi at first and as i drove it boost would climb higher with every few spools. I'm still takin it easy yet but i'm guessing the turbos won't fully spool until they're broken in.. Again i'm still a greenhorn here.. Last night was the first time i've ever driven a cummins powered pickup..
Anyway heres a few pics after i washed the pig up on my lawn, i still have quite a few things to button up so don't get too nit picky on me lol

Hey i'm back. So the wife flew me out to New Hampshire for Rally School! Had a great time until I came down with pneumonia.. Still battling it but it's not stopping me from finishing the truck.
I only have 30 miles on the truck and it started leaking oil real bad from the front of the motor. One step forward is always 2 steps backward with this thing. As it turns out the bolt came loose for the fan pulley and wore through the timing gear cover! The gears look to be ok, but the cover is junk which was customized for the adjustable pump gear cover.. So I had to dip back into my savings and buy a billet timing gear cover from ZRM Enterprises.. Hopefully it'll be here before we leave for Scheid next week.. I would like to get more miles on it before the long haul..

So I finally have some good news! Got all the oil, coolant, and boost leaks fixed over the weekend woo hoo! Test drive was very successful, hit 70 lbs of boost right away, I was giggling like a school girl. I've never heard anything like it, that second turbo makes the loudest screaming howl! Hopin to get some videos up soon, but been busy with work of course and getting ready for scheid this weekend. I'd like to get her on the dyno while i'm there and see what kind of numbers it's making. Takin it in tomorrow for an alignment and wednesday the windows are getting tinted then thursday loadin up.
Here's a shot of the new timing gear cover from ZRM enterprises, 350 bucks off ebay and worth every penny.

So it was a successful weekend at Scheid's diesel extravaganza! Took 1st place in the show n shine Saturday against 70+ amazing high dollar trucks and featured in Diesel Army and Diesel World magazine! All the hard work finally payed off, cant thank my friends enough for all the help and motivation! Felt good that my low budget build could go up against the big fancy trucks like the blowermax. :party018:

Definitely looking forward to going back next year, they put on a great event! I was in diesel heaven, beautiful trucks everywhere, 2 dynos, truck pulls, and drag racing I couldn't choose what I wanted to watch.  We went out to the after party for a little bit friday night, but got a little too crazy for us so we headed back to the hotel, aka our back seats..

Thanks man, need to take it to a local dyno and tune it. The guy down there let off at 3k rpms every time so the second turbo barley lit up. Partially my fault, I don't have the tach working yet and the motor wasn't warmed up for very long.  She only made 421hp and 812ft lbs. Was a very smooth powerband though, awesome low end torque!

You know there is a formula out there for HP and Torque, it says that at 5252 rpm or before ( I believe) the Hp and torque lines are suppose to meet and from there your Hp should be above the torque the rest of the time.

This guy that is on You Tube has a bunch of really cool videos on all kinds of different stuff, seems he know his periodic table really well and math.   ;D

If you want or need any advice or help, I have my associates in diesel industrial technology, and worked as a tech for awhile until I broke my back in an accident, I'm not as sharp minded as most now especially,,,, but I built my 24 valve 1998.5 ram 2500 5.9L cummins  ( automatic ) by myself from the ground up and dynoed at 576 rwhp and 1158 torque at the wheels on 58 lbs of boost, stock displacement.. Single turbo ... At UTI ( universal technical institute ). The school made a special exception to let me dyno after the build was done. Half the school was outside the dyno room watching it was pretty crazy. Only students in the hot rod program can dyno vehicles and 99 percent of the time it's only to be used for school vehicles strictly. I'm not a professional by any means but was a diesel junkie and truly enjoy the cummins engines. I was accepted into a very elite program, the cummins diesel program where a select few were chosen to participate. 8-12 students was the class size, but my first love broke my heart and I dropped out after I graduated and never went to even the first day of class in the program. I am NOT saying this by any means to brag at all or boast. This is my history behind Diesel engines, cummins engines are my absolute favorite and I focused heavily on them throughout school even though we worked on Detroit, catipillar and even a few Mercedes Diesel engines as well as other manufacturers .... I lost most of myself mentally physically after my accident and a lot of know how for Diesel engines , but if you would like tips I can most certainly help you and make some suggestions... But don't ask me to help fabricate  :-) I am not skilled in that area,  AT ALL .... you are obviously extremely naturally talented , your fabricating blows me away... Oh and congratulations Eric on the 1st place trophy and magazine shoots!  Anyways I'd be happy to help you. Oh and p.s...... For every 1 lb of boost EXPECT 10 horsepower ,,,,up to 15 hp per pound of boost depending on fuel / air and timing. :-)  15 hp per pound is difficult to reach but it's obtainable....  I must seriously say your truck is the baddest most fabricated through and through ,,,cleanest most unique diesel I have ever seen.... Truly.... Impressive is an understatement.... Way to go on this build Eric you did a fantastic grade A job!

Wow thanks guys! : ) After a long day of work I can always get a smile from this forum I appreciate it.
That's quite a story you have! I could definitely use some help with tuning so feel free to shoot ideas!
Truck makes 70 lbs of boost on the street and it's getting plenty of fuel so I can't believe the numbers are so low, but a lot of people have told me that every dyno is different and the dyno operator plays a huge role.
The tach is an autometer, I talked to them and they said I have a bad one and need to send it in for warranty  :P

I thought you said in your original post that he was only taking it to 3000 rpm on the dyno.  This alone will net you the small numbers.

Eric I'll get back with your post tomorrow it's late here and I'm falling asleep..... Your most welcome by the way.... We will see if we can't help you obtain bigger numbers, careful on that new engine Eric , you wouldn't want to spin a bearing and throw a rod....  Your engine hasn't even broken itself in yet, boost is 70 lbs but there is a lot of variables with a freshly built motor, no worries though, the power plant you have is well equipped,  was the dyno a diesel dyno? You must load the truck onto a diesel dyno that has heavy enough rollers to fully spool your turbos up too, that has a lot to do with it... Eric man , you did a heck of a job. I'll post up some questions/tips tomorrow for you to go through, process of elimination , that's all....  No worries,  just know to hit 500 hp on pump fuel alone is a major accomplishment for a Diesel engine  ( 5.9L cummins that is ) , so don't be too hard on yourself just yet , you'll see big numbers, just a matter of tweaking and tuning brother

Bake is right, taking your cummins to 3000 on the dyno will only net you 65 percent IF THAT on your true rear wheel horsepower and torque, my advice, put more miles and tuning into the motor before a dyno run again, how many miles does the engine have? It's late and I don't  recall .... Careful running high rpms with that much boost if it's a new engine inside,,,,  it would be tragic to have anything let loose before it wears in a bit. A truck will get used to YOUR driving style, but it needs time.... And love... To get there and stay there ....

Irish a stock cummins power in the 80's and 90's falls flat on its face after 2650 as far as hp goes, max torque is a thousand rpms lower that that   1st and 2nd gen ..... 3rd gen cummins go 3000 and then fall flat on their face hp wise... Horsepower is there in higher rpm but torque falls short severely. All the torque is made off of low rpm, say 1400 to 2100 is generally max torque for a stocker depending on the year..etc....  Lots of variables....

It's max rpm output is a low governed 3200rpm for 1998.5 to 2007 to give you an idea for those years, 12 valve 1st gen 5.9l were governed at 2700 rpm 89' to 1998. 24 valves took over in 1998.5 . 93 to 98 were a series, 89 to 93 a series, 1998.5 to 2002 a series, 03 to 07 a series , 2007.5 til now  6.7l and 5.9L .... Fueling started out with the p7100 pump moving to the vp44 pump and then high pressure common rail system,,, peak torque for most stock cummins were several hundred rpm off idle to mid 2000 rpm range,,, not very useful to take a stock cummins past mid 2 grand mark, power drops off

Yea I definitely need to spend more time driving and breaking it in, i've been babying it too much. I cringed when it was on the dyno.. I think a lot of it has to do with how the dyno operator loaded it. The turbo setup is for towing, so it makes 70lbs boost just before 3k rpm. I'll post a pic of the dyno sheet and the video later today.

I think you need to baby it,,,drive the truck with white gloves for the first 5000 miles Eric.... Drive it easy..... And it will help last you a long time.... What is your timing set at for intake and exhaust valves ?      Lol you should cringe when it's on the dyno and being ran that hard. That's really tough on a new fresh motor.....  I cringed when mine was thrown on the dyno too a bit. I was behind the driver seat with a couple hundred or more students watching me  :P lol that was a hoot for sure..... Well what is your axle gear ratio? I'm sure I could go through and re read your build posts and check myself but for ease of knowing I just wanted to ask ....talk to me about the specs and details on your exhaust , down pipe , etc... Your exhaust manifold? Your intake manifold?  Fuel line size? Fuel supply line size ? Pump specs?  Do you have a FASS ? Fuel air separation system? How big are the lines running from the tank pickup tube to the delivery tube / supply line?  How much is your fuel pressure at idle and WOT ( wide open throttle ) ? Half open throttle? I forgot... Do you have a waste gate ? Two waste gates ? If so what is the leg off spring pressure set at?  Some set ups do not have a waste gate ,,,, what is the air filter you are using and it's micron ( filtering rating ) ?   Also Eric.... After your engine has been broken in, you will see a increase in boost and your pistons rings will have seated much better thus creating more compression .... You know what that means.... More horsepower and torque :-).  What is your current injector setup?  Nozzle flow rate ?  Did you O-ring or fire ring the head? ( cylinder head )   ... What type of head gasket did you use ? Material it's made out of?  What does the truck weigh exactly ? How much boost at 1/4 throttle , 1/2 throttle , 3/4 throttle and full throttle ?   What is your EGT temps under the different throttle positions..? And what is it under a normal towing load?   What is your tire weight and size ?   I have forgotten the details on your truck! But I have read through each and every one of your posts! I just can't remember ! My memory isn't the best !    I know this is a lot of questions but just take your time! It may take me a minute to respond too so please have patience for me! Hope you have a great day!

yea I don't have enough time to answer all them questions lol but i know it's getting PLENTY of fuel, i'm leaning towards propane injection to clean up the unburnt fuel and a water methanol kit to cool down egt's. I pulled the camper up to the Volga city truck cruise this weekend and egt's hit 1500 a couple times climbing long steep grades.  Also had the problem of the new breather coming out of the front timing gear cover puking oil out while driving.. I'm wondering if my engine builder didn't set the aftermarket dipstick right and there was too much oil in the motor.. When I changed the oil it took just under 2 1/2 gallons to fill it to the full mark.  On the good side of things I got my tach working and she pulled the camper like there was nothing behind me! For braking I installed an inertia sensing brake controller which worked awesome.

I just wanted to say, I've been following this thread for a couple years now, and the final product looks amazing! It'd be awesome to see a video of it running and driving when you get a chance as well!

I remember you saying something about being able to adjust the fuel plate from inside the cab somehow, and I don't recall you ever saying how you did that? On your thread on 67-72 you said "AFC is deleted, I just have an adjustable fuel plate that I can control from inside the cab.", but how does that work, with a servo or something? How do you have that set up?

Thanks "HighTechRedneck". Sorry i'm going to keep the adjustable pump a secret for now, might be building kits down the road..
I finally got the mudflaps installed, they look and work awesome! Good thing too, the tires were throwing massive rocks and destroying the paint..

Eric, you did a TRULY AMAZING and EXTREMELY SUPERIOR  job on the truck. It looks GREAT. The time and dedication was well worth every bit. Your skills are FANTASTIC. I hope that the truck serves you well for a very long time. It's also cool your wife is so understanding haha. She chose a very nice steering wheel for you too! My gf was questioning me on why I need new spark plugs the other day lol. She will come around tho. Can't wait to see this truck in person some day. Post up a video with a walk around and stuff showing everything off and maybe a roadtest??

Hey Eric;

So on the front mudflaps you still have a gap between the wheelwell arch and the inner fender?  A place where mud and dirt can collect?  Just clarifying the design.  There is that step between the two.

Thanks,

yep theres a gap so anything that gets behind the flare can fall right out the bottom.

Soo for those of you wondering if this truck is just another trailer queen.. answer is no, unless that means it always has a trailer hooked up then yes lol
Hauled this house section just yesterday. I was very pleased with how the truck handled it, felt a lot of confidence behind the wheel. She could definitely haul much heavier payloads.  My friend took a video of me climbing a very steep grade on a gravel road, i'll get it posted when he sends it to me.
Heres a few pics, enjoy

Darn, I was wanting to build one of those adjustable kits for a 12 valve. But I honestly can't blame you for keeping it to yourself. I might be a customer once I get me one!  :)

And the truck is looking better and better every time I look at it! Can't wait to see that video and more of the truck! So awesome that this isn't a trailer queen! :D

New to this, read through all the build, looks amazing. i  don't know how to post pictures of my conversion but was curious about yours. Did you use any body lift ? Mine is tight and I have been debating on installing one. Also been driving mine about 2 years now, have you had any issue yet? i just recently changed all line up pins on leaf springs, had three that had sheared off. Getting ready to start the second conversion on single cab this round in stead of the four door. Thanks
