Cab sitting lower than bed
« on: May 04, 2019, 07:14:37 PM »
Hello, I have a 79 C10 that I am working on and I am getting to take to the body shop. The cab sits about a half inch lower than the bed on the drivers side and about a quarter inch on the passenger side. Other than body mount bushings, which I have ordered; does any know of anything more serious that might cause this? I had the bed off when I painted the rear frame. The chassis looked pretty good from the cab back. I wish I would have replaced the bushings when I had the bed off. Thanks for responses in advance.

Cab mounts/Cab supports, Fatigued springs, bent frame, rot, etc.

Thanks for the reply,

There isn’t any rot, the area where the bushings are mounted looks fine. I did take a bolt off and rubber dust came flying down. I’m gonna replace the mount bushings and see if it raises it what it needs to rise to even out with the bed, About 5/16 on the drivers side and 1/4 on the passengers side. If it was a tweaked frame would one side be significantly different than the other.

Original bushings on my cab were so compressed that the cab was resting on the top of the transfer case, and the shifter linkage was out of alignment.  Replaced with new poly bushings and everything came into alignment.  It was also way quieter in the cab because there was no  longer any  metal-to-metal contact between drivetrain and body.

I lubed the poly bushings before installation, but they still creaked and squeaked for a while before settling into place.  All of the bolts came out without any issues, although it was hard to access the bolts for the bushings up at the radiator support.   I just loosened all the bolts, and then jacked up the cab slightly at each bushing location, using a hydraulic jack and a length of 2x4, and replaced one bushing at time with the truck parked in my driveway.

Thanks, it’s reassuring that you replaced your bushings and it it all lined up. Mine look pretty compressed but won’t know until I replace them if will line it up. Dust did go flying out when I removed the bolt.
