Best tire option
« on: October 15, 2018, 08:29:50 AM »
Hello all, I just installed a rebuilt 700r4 transmission in my '74 step side (lowered 5/6). I had a shop convert the rear end to a posi-traction I asked the shop what the gearing was and was told I have 3.73 gears.

Now my question to you guys is, what would be the best tire size to complement my "new" driveline?

I currently have 20x8 fronts and 20x10 rear wheels. I might be going to a smaller wheel diameter. Been thinking about some aftermarket Rally's but not sure what size they come in, possibly 16's or 17's if they make them in those sizes.

What tire size are you guys running?

Any help is appreciated

I read this as you are wanting tire size recommendations.  What will the truck be usd for the most?  Driver?
With 3.73 gears you could run up to a 30" tall tire if you do a lot of driving.
The rim size has no bearing on the gearing, only the tire diameter.  And a few places make steel 16/17 wheels.  Wheel Vintiques and Stockton wheel.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes you are correct in that I am looking for tire size recommendations.  Truck is my one week on one week off driver.

Currently front is 20x8 245/45/20 (28.7") with the rear at 20x10 265/45/20 (29.4"). The ride is not bad but it could use a little more tire to soften the ride a bit, that is the reason for a smaller wheel and more tire, I hope that makes sense to you guys.

Thanks again.

I would keep the tire height where you are (around 30"), just adjust for rim size.  If you like the look of larger wheels, 18's will give you that with more sidewall too.
