Title: Rebirth of Sandy
Post by: jpizzle440 on November 03, 2016, 10:21:31 PM
A friend of mine built this truck and I helped from time to time. The next owner gave it a hard run into a ditch at 60+ and I ended up with the truck. Got me a new frame and away I went.

If I remember right it was 5-7 drop and the frame is jacked up. Had to swap stock spindles to get it high enough off the ground to drive.

Had to beat the fender in to get the door open.

Surprisingly none of the bumper brackets, bumper, or core support was damaged.

Blasted, painted. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161104/ffe4b286dad5fb2f9ac06c9f24980cad.jpg)

Phone I had at the time broke and I lost pictures of the frame going together. I used QA1 ball joints, rebuilt the control arms with Polly bushings.

This is not an intention to completely restore... but you know how it goes, air box wasn't sealed to the firewall anymore, took that off to fix, found a Crack in the box, got after the old puddy and seam sealer- down to paint and some places metal, which led to sanding. At some point you got to say WHOA HORSE!!! NOT NOW!!!

Irritating it's not right but full intentions are plans to do all the body in the future considering Fenders won't match and whisky scratches from previous owner.

Nice save!  It's great to see these old trucks be reborn.

Your photo documentation is great.  Keep up the great work.

To cover up my wiring from paint, I used aluminum foil rather than tape - it's a little easier and quicker to remove.  Just a thought.

It looks like you taped and identified the electrical connections.  Good call.

IIRC, the wiring diagrams are located in the Tech section.

PS:  Sent you a PM

I should have thought about using foil. Thanks for the tip. Yes I know about the diagrams, I'll look it up after I get everything done. For now that section of wiring is staying on the transmission.

This one sat for awhile. Bought a front clip earlier this year off a guy that made a trailer out of a bed. Would say original spindles considering it had original ball joints.

Sold the 20's that was on it today. Going to drop the core support and rallies I got off at sand blasters this week.

What she used to look like. Asked the original builder, he said it was a 6/9 drop. I'm not doing the axle flip and I'm taking off the drop spindles. Reason being I don't want to cut into the frame and don't need it that low. Would look better hauling my jet boats around I think. I'd have to ask him what the spindles and drop Springs are but I believe it will be around 4/5 drop without the spindles and axle flip.

The easiest way to find out what drop you have is to measure center of spindle to bottom of wheel well factory is 19.5, if your looking for 4/5 stick with the flip kit in the rear and go with factory shackles. You have 2 inch drop shackles right now which would make the rear 7 or 8 depending on the flip kit brand (some kits or 5 or 6 inch drop.) It doesnt look like the spring perches are the drop perches so if you stick with the shackles only you're going to only have a 2inch drop.

Stock kit has 2 different size bushings. I didn't know it, but these drop shackles are the same I.D. as the leafs. So I'm going to have to order another set to do the other leaf.

Leaf liners. Herd good and bad things about these. I bought graphite paint but decided not to use it, original paint was still 90% in between the leafs.

Got the drop spring swapped to the new frame. Went to install drop shock, opened the box and realized the tech  I had talked to told me the wrong shock to get. Another set back, but not too big of a deal. Should have opened them when I got them.

So I been jacking with the brake lines trying to bend them to their shape. I tell you what, if I was building a show truck I'd have sent the lines back. It's hard to make a straight run straight again after they bent them to fit in the box. I get the front section pretty dang close and started on the rear section. Well it's longer. 1' 3" longer, measured the original and new ones twice with rope. Confirmed correct part number from company. Said they would get back with me in 24-48 hours. Being as the rear section comes as a set with the front section, until they call me back I'm not sure if I'm going to reuse the old rear section or not. Starting to really wish I had made my own. Reason I bought them is because I'm not ready to pull motor off of the old frame and I can't get them out with the motor in the way the frame is bent. Aggravating

Depending on the outcome with the vendor, you could always shorten the lines and double flare the ends.  Just don't forget to reinstall the line nuts before broaching.

The truck is coming along nicely.

If they make it right, and send a new one without bending it. I may just wait. I can reach it easy if I get the cab on before then. The bends on the rear one aren't close to what they need to be to hit locations for the clips, I believe it's for a long bed.

To save anyone some time that hasn't come across this, here is a little info. GM has a few different spindles for these trucks. There are different shaft lengths, diameters and rotors. So I know there was different diameters at first. Apparently the ones I'm using go to an 83 truck. I had bought the right bearings for the spindles but the 86 rotors don't work on an 83 spindle. Or I may be backwards but anyways I checked to see if the bearings would fit in the rotors after I drove an hour to get them and the race wouldn't even fit. So if you live in the country take everything with you, lol and check it ALL before you drive back home.

There were only 2 different spindles.  1" rotor (standard on 1981-1987) and 1.25" HD standard on 1973-1980 and optional on 1981-1987.

Thanks captkos.

Had to do some traveling but back at it. Got both sides done. It's nice to see less rusty parts on the new frame. Got to tear apart the other leaf and get it done before the bushings show up. Got the sway bar mounted but need more weight on the frame to get it bolted to the control arms. Thinking about changing the seals out on the steering gear box. Has oil on it and everything else above it is clean on the old frame.

How did you determine the plate was wrong? Looks like you just need to put the pin in the spring mount, possible the plate is 180 out.

Either way I flop it the ubolts are at an angle when I lower the spring on the line up hole with the axle perch, then slide the bolts in to see how the look. This is the hole on the plate.

Did some horse trading with the axle flip so I need to keep these on the original frame. Plan on using it as a dolly to work on some beds for my other trucks.

No sir im deleting the c-notch in the rear. These come frome djm then. Only thing that didn't have that paint on when I cleaned them was the front leaf mounts. They had a light blue original coat. These axle pads, drop shackles, and shock extensions had that speckled grey black paint before I stripped them.

This is a new frame. I pulled the drop shackles and drop mount off of the old frame. Didn't want my truck that low so I'm not using the c-notch. If I flipped the axle on the new frame it would need it. I also deleted the drop spindles and kept the drop springs.

Well guys I had a a busy year traveling for work and a broken dodge cummins that put a hole in my wallet. But I'm back digging through my parts picking up where I left off. This time I'm working both my orange truck, pulled the gearbox, hydroboost, and power steering box of my 84 dually. Rebuilt the gear box wich is surprisingly easy. Waiting on some custom sockets from the machine shop so I can torque the worm gear bearings correctly and adjuster nut. Also the dang hydroboost didn't come with a firewall plate and getting a socket made for it to instead of buying one for $100+. Got the front leafs for my 83 4x4 4door swb blasted today. Fixing to pull the monster lift off of it. Goal is to get these dang projects put to daily drivers so I can get out from under these expensive diesels. Got a couple of turbo too!!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171122/d606edbcf9fb53b14525a8029149a164.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171122/8b8bf5031764522c969263864cfe101a.jpg)

Had a couple touch up spots on ends, was dark in booth last night. Clean the cobwebs off the other pieces. Teflon gaskets and bushings after paint cures(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171123/4eb0fc880ef700fe64cf704def6860eb.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171123/cb70b9c2f20671a5d9c1199d76f1ee03.jpg)

Got bushings and teflon on. Now I can finally move the frame around to the front of the shop and start bolting lines and tanks on. Got to dig through all my parts and see if I have another extra set of tank mounts. I sacrificed mine to my brothers truck. Got a buddy that might have an extra set. He deleted his for a custom rear mount he had built. Got several hours of driving tomorrow so may not get much accomplished other than parts gathering. What ever I dig up for tank straps hopefully I don't have to get them blasted. If so got plenty of other things to work on like prepping the motor with new parts. So I've searched high and low through my shop, and in all my boxes of parts. Some how I've lost 2 of my axle u-bolts. Got everything I have bought for this truck accounted for except for the 2 things I need right now :( Got a friend of mine hunting his parts to see if he kept his after his axle flip. Hopefully I come up with something this weekend or I'm going to order a couple new ones.

Hot dog!! I found them. Found them in a scrap been outside. Thought the threads was toast. Cleaned them up~threads, and the paint held up good for where they was. :) going to blast and repaint for good measure. If they lasted that well in the pile that was in means the rest of the job I've done will last year's. How they got there I'll never know. Got the leaf of and rolled her around to the front of the shop. Going to have to do some hammering on the tank flange. Coming up short. Buddy of mine has an extra set of tank straps going to pick them up tonight. Got to get on the computer and dig up old pics of how all the fuel and brake lines was mounted tonight. Picked up my parts from my buddy. The brackets come with feshly cleaned tanks and brand new sending units only used to break in a 383 stroker.  This works out becuase my short wide 4x4 has been sitting for several years. One of my brothers borrowed it and blew the trans up. Still waiting on the money for that. But instead of cleaning the tanks I can just swap these in it. Also when I picked them up I got the tank shields too which I didn't have on my truck or the parts frame I got. Going to check them out in the daylight and decide if I'm going to use them. Went to pull these brackets off the tanks and noticed something. The metal base wraps around the tank more than the ones I have bolted to my frame and have another hole for the plastic shield mount. I didn't catch this when I stripped the original frame and the new frame. When I stripped the new frame I had everything blasted then stacked the parts to be used as I put it together, it is an 81 frame if I remember correctly, must be why the straps are different. When I got the cab off and started stripping the original frame one side of the tank mounts was busted from being wrecked. And I didn't think anything of it when I pulled them that they was different. So I'm most likely going to use both sets of these new tank mounts. Going to have them blasted with the rear leaf springs of my other truck on Monday. Keep getting side tracked with daily life but still making progress. More rearranging of the shop. Got the old exhaust off so I can mount the new manifolds. Motor positioned better to pick for mounting to frame. Spray gun is so much easier than rattle cans and way less fumes and over spray. Primer shot well, ment to go to town and get hardener for the paint but had other things to do.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171205/316ab1d88fad4ed9a332f173f9ccdd9e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171205/02caa7f4c33929181e98b75593471185.jpg)

Haven't made much progress lately but back on it. Made a new shop heater, took awhile, but warm enough to get back to painting. Mixing this rustoleum is kind of a guessing game. Primer was great but the paint takes a little plating with. Mixed it too then the first time and was runny. Think I got it now. Definatly going with different paint for the fenders. But this is fine for the parts under the truck. Brackets and guards mounted. Paint turned out better than I expected after it dried. Fixing to rain so I'm not going to mount the tanks. Got to put a pump in one still. Probably do that, mount the new manifolds on the motor and do some more painting tonight. Welding a nut to the bolt didn't work. Broke 2 off and then built weld up on it twice to where I could get some vise grips on and that didn't work. Don't have any small easy outs so going to hunt around Monday so I can avoid putting a helicoil in. Got the other fuel pump mounted in the tank. Put on the motor mount adaptors but got some cutting to do for the mount shell to clear the block. I wouldn't try an ez out, too much risk of breaking it. I would rather center punch, use a small drill bit and go progressively larger.

If it's done well enough, a tap can clean the threads, or if you get close to the end and think you may be off center, you can try welding a nut to it, the weld will partially fill the void and give a stronger purchase, plus since you've drilled the center it should make removing a little easier.

If you are going to use the weld a nut trick, the stud surface needs to be cleaned or scored well enough for it to bite. Turn the welder up high and get it out while it's hot.

The best type of extractors I've used...

...make rapid work of boring a hole in a broken bolt/stud remnant (that is easily redirected toward the center of the original hole if the extractor begins to drift sideways while drilling - which is nearly inevitable).

The extractors work well when used in conjunction with an effective penetrating oil such as PB Blaster or Silikroil and the direct application of heat.  If the remnant proves too stubborn for the extractor, painstakingly follow up using a compact pneumatic die grinder and sharp 5/16" carbide burr (imaged below) to remove the rest of the bolt/stud core until barely exposing the crown of the original bolt hole threads.  When done perfectly, what is left of the old bolt threads will pull out of the hole in the shape of a Helicoil.  I've saved expensive crankshafts applying this method and successfully removed many broken exhaust studs with the engines still in vehicles.  It should be much easier to accomplish with an engine mounted on a sturdy stand.  Patience and constant checking are key.

Think I'm going to try welding a nut on it again. I was letting it cool but I didn't think about heating the head. Watched a guy on YouTube, after letting it cool he went around the bolt with a propane torch for a minute and they backed right out.

This was a PITA. Had to bend the tank flanges more with these newer style tank mounts. Was able to get a washer and nut barely on the rear strap. Front strap I tried this clamp first and wasn't enough. Then I got a strap and got it tighter than a banjo string and was able to get half a nut started. Then I synched up on it and backed off to put a washer on.  Had to take the tank guard off to get anti squeak pads on. Don't know what I was thinking when I put them on. On the hunt in my parts for the passenger side hose assembly. When they put the fuel tank in my brothers truck they took it off and I got to find it. Found the cap and plastic housing that bolts to the bed but not the hoses or the metal fill neck. Crossing fingers. After everything being stripped, blasted, painted and ready to put back together, you would think there wouldn't be any road blocks. So apparently the clam shell mounts on these trucks have a triangle or heart shaped indentation in the middle. I didn't know this. The ones I have have a U shaped intention. Messaged the maker of the swap mounts and got a quick reply that they look like mounts from a GMT400, and sent a pic of the original mount with part #. So in my luck both donor sets I have are the wrong style. Some how I never threw away one of the shells from the wrecked frame that is all bent up. It fits but now need to locate a new set. Last pic is what the mount should be.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/af0effa115f5eb1a0c51b2b3e0adcd97.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/da621e2d4f4e9d0a8cab6ac1704b2854.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/016eb23eabdb6becb0084185457e63a1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/bb4d67924d1402d2455be8702485b5af.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/ffc9b662abf60464d971d866ed20747c.jpg)

Jackpot, got the hood back out and went after the manifold bolt again. Got the torch out and put enough heat around the broken bolt to get the moisture to go away about an inch all the way around and was able to unscrew it with a pair of channel locks. In my line of work I should have known better to think of that but hey it happens.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/c58a06005596347686f12cf1eb9a9a5b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/0471fb87d4fa173741a4e7070c8dc7f3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171218/ebc2c8c6b7039f4d7d60ed3e592e810c.jpg)

The original builder of this truck I grew up with and stayed great friends all my life past away after a motorcycle accident first of this year and it's been hard to get motivated on the build. But I'm back at it now, got some new ideas and some new toys help with the build.

Just got in a 37* flare head for my eastwood flare. I've decided to completely scrap the stock fuel and brake line locations. Going to run A/N fittings on everything, and 95 percent hard line. Already have most the stainless line but I may not have enough 1/4". Ordered a bunch of fittings but dont plan on bending anything except maybe rear brake lines until I get the cab and motor set. Ordered a proportion valve that bolts to the master cylinder.

Last few days I been tearing apart harnesses. Ripped apart the rear truck harness to save the full length trailer plug harness. Decided to take the rest apart for free wire for other plans. Bad thing about that is none of it is guage stamped. Got to pull out the old micrometer to figure that out.

I had ordered a wire labeler several days ago and it still hasn't showed up, so I'm using the old method for now. Made it half way through the engine harness last night. Got a few wires I need to research a little harder before I pull them. My wire labeler was supposed to show up in the mail before I started this, not important but I'll still label the wires I cut and separated. Pretty much done just need to lay it on the motor, see how it lays and loom, extend cruise wires, and fusebox wiring. In the process of this, learned I have to change up my alternator to get a good charge or just replace it. Get to that later. Ended up taping the harness a bit more and putting it in a box for now. Ordered a fuse block kit and some loom tape. Didn't like how the plastic fell apart when I stripped the harness.

Went to put the Camaro pump on and realized I cant use my stock alternator/ps pump bracket. Going to have to do some research on what I will do. Got a few things to move around in the shop but hope to have the motor and cab on by the weekend. Got the parts in for my fuseblock just waiting on a few more things to show up but ready to stab key items on the frame.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181129/686f1db1c9be19411e2bdafc3dd0bcd3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181129/aa8ad01e6ed2c800fc4fa6c9d49c8585.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181129/7a14ddda5f2830e21857601541cd28a9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181129/d02b783e216d8c74eb5a80b0a2523311.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181129/d412bfe29142d17dd650df5002e94c44.jpg)

Got motor in. Fittings I bought for sending unit aren't going to work the way I wanted  so I'm going to try a different route to hardline straight off of them. Going to wait on the cab until I get these how I want them. Working break lines until then. Not as hard as I thought it would be, but definitely got to pay attention to the bends. I'm using tig wire with my benders to make patterns.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/56ff184bff6cba7daa8bdbb2bc9a73db.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/0fd919e7df03bd1973e8a7efae76a3d7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/846cb8f787dc9fcfa74eb1dda63ee1e3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/f0c1442ecb2fd7f4e86c53fad6d6a622.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/75816b043aad18606a74008a5e5d5348.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/f522940986c3fc161d7a8ed20b01e0c2.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/c28b2783660fca7ac79248d8eb4d187d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181203/e5686cb38688fd1297d503b5a36f323a.jpg)

Second set of fittings showed up, but the 1/4" isn't going to fit in the middle. Was hoping to go hardline as far as I could on everything to make it easier later down the road when it rots. Just a vent so not as big of an issue. Maybe next time a pump wears out I'll build a custom sending unit. And by the way the sending unit is not a true 1/4" O.D. found that out too when I tried to put the fitting on. Bend these lines, get the other tank ready and probably call it a night and get on it tomorrow.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181206/b29cec0185c22520a7ccc5ff603ab807.jpg)

Didn't get much done last night. Got tired of the cold. I was going to route these in the stock selector location, then remembered how much it sucked the last time I replaced one. So after about an hour of dreaming up some way to keep it in the original area, dreaming up different ways to make brackets, because of the offset, I got frustrated.. Every way I looked at it, I didn't like it. So I finally looked at the bar I had been sitting on and the lightbulb clicked. Now that's out of the way, back to routing the lines. Not sure if I will put the cab on after this, I got to move the vette outside to do it and the weather is getting bad. May be a few days if it snows like they are saying. Holding them in place because I've run out of short bolts. Going to tweak the 5/16 up a bit more after I get it bolted in place and trim them both. Not going to lie, between straightening the tubing and bending it, its pretty time consuming. That and the 3/8 tubing is a hoss, wish my benders had longer handles. Have you considered brazing a short extension and AN steel fitting directly to the return nipple?

Ya, I'm not too worried about it being a vent. Going to buy good quality hose and let it be for now.

Unless you've repurposed the lines the 1/4" nipple is a fuel return to tank, not a vent.  Standard configuration is 3/8" (10 mm) fuel supply, 5/16" (8 mm) vent to vapor canister and 1/4" (6 mm) fuel return to tank.  Although fuel pressure ideally should be nominal, the line routes liquid fuel, not vapor.

Left is my sending unit, right is older style. Tank selector has 3/8 feed 5/16 return. Not sure for what years exactly but is goes from 86-91, I looked at every one of those manuals to be sure before I got this older sending unit for another one of my trucks. My 84 dually has a 1/4" return. I put the calipers on it not too long ago. So I believe 85-6 it changed. If it was not a baffled tank I could see repurposing the vent to help cool the pump. I measured the height difference from the baffle to the pump and it should stay continuously 2/3rds submerged if not ran under 1/4 of a tank for very long. Trust me I was baffled reading what others had done wasn't making sense with the parts I have and what the manuals say. Also my 84 having a 1/4" return threw me for a loop until I ordered the other sending unit for my brothers truck.

Finished the fuel lines, got new bolts to put the keepers on. Rain isn't supposed to stop until noon Sunday. Hopefully it stays just rain. I'm about to run out of stuff to do until I can get the cab on. I did get my front frame adapters in for the brake lines, but I need to dig up an old union to see what the thread depths are. This new one is about 1/8" deeper than the stock brake line from the frame to the caliper. This idea was to get away from those cheesy wafer nuts that hold these on the inside of the frame, moving the connection to a more accessible spot. But on a good note, all this stainless will last forever, and I'll never fight stripping the stock style fittings with a line wrench.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/7a8e3e635cb666ce2edc76c910710625.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/c7a3f1f5ba94090ae8f5a32d2b4883e6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/eb3cfe0144147c3deaddee5e0b435b95.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/7d2863cbe1079c870341d5ad55db8387.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181208/5d14dd7f106d8a8f95d05e8652d0f3b8.jpg)

Not much today, rain and snow. Once I about broke Google and decided to get out of the house and trace down more wires on the cab. I wanted to wait until I had the cab set so I could lay them out. Going to end up changing a lot but I got tired of sitting around. Found a set of signal wires run to the mirrors from the front blinker wires.  Thought that was odd because he never told me they had blinkers in them. Pulled the door aftermarket door panel off to check that and I'm not too sure I like the panel, probably but something different.  Going to have to unbolt them mirrors later and further investigate. Got the labeler in about a week or so go, figured I'd put it to good use. Haven't made much progress, I'm waiting on some hangers and bolts to show up to run the exhaust before I finish the brake/fuel/transmission lines. I left the trans lines on out of curiosity of where they would lay after i set the motor and they are in the way. I did get the old junker steering gear off. Cleaned the cobwebs out of the cab and ripped out some accessory wiring I didnt want. Going in with 304 stainless exhaust. Ordered all new shock mounts, was going to use the old ones but threads was a bit buggered up. Still waiting on parts, got my loom tape in and one manifold stud.

Been working on tiddely stuff, first adaptor I ordered for rear brake was wrong. Finally got the new one in and finished the flare on it. Replaced the mock up bracket on the diff with the one I already painted. Changed out some regular bolts with grade 8.

I finished separating wires on the bulkhead awhile ago, I been holding off on the wiring until my loom and computer mount shows up. I want to see how everything fits before I cut and lengthen wires. I've had my fuseblock setup for awhile now. I'm pretty sure I've got a way to use the original shift linkage without alot of modification so I cleaned it up and painting now.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/ddc27c2c3443aabc06a66ce50113561a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/274e306b376e60512ceaddc958cd49d9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/cf93a49669307ca79d5ee15aec7e9430.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/2cf555124a62d0825ab7db9ea558b7f5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/52c60d1035e7783a6c307f5676955a7e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/416ea74796711b11989490ec77c8166a.jpg)

Mocked up the passenger side last night. I was going to cut it to elevation but put another straight run in for a visual to the rear first. After looking at it I've decided to wait until the mufflers show up. I want to visualize where I want to mount them and see how far up I can raise the exhaust before I make final cut and weld. I'll probably wait until the bed is mounted before I run it over the axle. I'm hoping to put the mufflers in the rear to move the drone as far aft as possible for the long drives. We will see when they show up.

Going to start working the shift linkage so I can mock up driver side, then finish brake and fuel lines so I can mount the driver finderwell and finish the wiring. Pulled the linkage arm and trans line fittings off of an extra 700r4 i have. Need to order AN adapters.

Got the linkage hooked up. Got to play with it some more to figure out how to get it to hit first gear, i think it's a combination of slop where it pins into the column, and possibly needs bent. I can hit first if I help it from underneath but cant quite get to engage inside the truck.

Surprisingly the downcomer I cut for the passenger side is the exact degree for the driverside but the elevation is about an inch or so different. I wont be able to raise the driver side elevation up as much as the passenger side though because of the linkage. I was hoping to split the difference between the cab and trans mount to allow for more clearance if the transmission ever needed to be pulled. Still not going to weld anything until I get the mufflers in. Got called to Robinson Illinois after my last post and was away for several months. Got home this summer and it's been one thing after another taking up my time but I'm back on it now. I never ordered 02 bungs so I went after the exhaust again knowing I'll be removing them again, so I'll have room to figure the shift linkage out later. I had the down pipes fabbed and partially welded before I left. Finished them off and bolted them up. Fabbed up the straight runs and welded them out. Next will be mocking up hangers and cutting to length for mufflers. I may stop there with the exhaust until I get the bed mounted so I can visualize how I need to cut the rest of the bends. With all that fabbed I can move back to plumbing fuel and brake lines. Was perdy dang hot today so not much progress. Not sure how I'll have it exit until the bed is on. But probably like the last pic but farther back with another v-band clamp, will decide when I cross that path. I actually fabbed this one for the passenger side but got off on my measurement- I added 1/2" to my cut line thinking I wanted it off the frame that far, ended up hitting the e brake line way farther back than I thought it would be. Got too confident not test fitting, being it a slip on connection. Will definitely make sure next one fits.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/c9724b01aa0a5ed331b125f90acd4325.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/aa06c598eb740e244e9df8752d0af289.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/f481be090c803d5e21d7988e2a1f1cb9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/4e57d97b5d330503a666e6a6db44cbef.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/edd83c34f916a6bf95b685fffdde0289.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/376863cc3d0bc255c8052966d92e7987.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/5e4fa8691137cca579c7a4c59d965877.jpg)

A little bit of information, the pipe I bought is 304, the mufflers are made from 409. 400 grade stainless is high in carbon, a magnet will stick to it. You need a rod 18 percent chromium, 8 percent nickel. Dissimilar welds require the correct filler metal. In this situation inconel 82 would work 90 percent of the time on Dissimilar welds. I'm all out of that but the next option is 309L. That procedure is good up 500 degrees. Monell is another option but I think***(not for sure) that is for cold process, like food plants. In my case I think I will be fine. But for you turbo guys doing your research is important.

I have been using 1/16 308 wire on all the 304 fittings. Running anywhere around 40-60 amps. I didnt have any 1/16 309 and used 3/32 on the mufflers. Seamed to lay down alot better than the 1/16 I been using. I'll be using 3/32 for the rest.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/373bc15ecd8383b1fd2621b28d8478e6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/a1b785db0efdd1a4ca82e90edcf439c4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/8b8b92f103de73b609669ab564ff08f5.jpg)

Now back to the fuel & brake lines. 02 bungs should be here tomorrow. Looking at what I have I think I'm going to have to use vband clamps to finish the exhaust or tac everything in place and pull the bed back off and weld it in position. Worry about that later.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/b13b20d0c3bf6a540ddea1dd4da8c54b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/9f0015bdf77ef1bd03480df977a7725e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/ada90f3eb4911be85204960ca928c664.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/90c86d9bb80b18c617c0dc8e9a62c617.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/b25dd4fe8a80520fecf4f09765a43cef.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190813/cc9bab7c2c69a26d0812d668f2391213.jpg)

Figured I'd go ahead and straighten up the wiring before I finished plumbing the lines. Got to shorten and lengthen a few. Added the fuel pump wires. Looks like a mess, but it will be sharp in the end. Dont mind the million zip ties, they are sacrificial once I get everything like I want it.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/308db928f24b852e1930fb97ef4550e9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/d62dc394d0012963806db8f23c58e9ad.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/656487f70898f0ab574b83511acb1201.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/8ffa5cec04edee1a9218ea02fea697cf.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/6d67a6a9b77579f3e29a93f43bcdc165.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/f7eedf038b59efba0dafa05333ebf8bd.jpg)

I was looking over my fuse box wiring trying to decide how I'm going to loom all of this. Doing so I realized I never posted pictures of the finished project. That must have been when they called me to leave 2 weeks earlier than planned.

I know this can be wired way simpler, but I didn't like how a bunch of stuff was tied together. Makes it harder to trace down an issue. I drew up several ways of doing this before I pulled the trigger. Also I thought of everything I would want on this truck and looked up the schematics before wiring this. Ended up with extra fuse slots both constant and 12v ignition.

I used some of my weather pac terminals on another truck I put digital guages in so I'm going to have to order some more.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/c8651f034aa753d6f6dee7dcef636dbb.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/43e478202fa2b7eff82712da3e025f51.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/b0c4e4950b1555c3d3b20bde6bbf1c3f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/b11a3643c0379adb89689285d7053c7e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/980ce217fd7d13948533e28cdcb3b437.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/e36b3dadf28fcf0a4f33e41497f0cc11.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190814/bb12ffc9a250e84caf6fc78399008e0a.jpg)

Gunna have to order some adapters. Spacers that went over the studs between the cylinder and bracket had too small of an I.D. I'll wait until the adapters show up before I worry about that, may not need them.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190815/f2537e1698671095d3e31dc496dae268.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190815/a857ec01940e87f90c92fc821f7d492c.jpg)

Not sure I'm going to go straight into the brake lines just yet. Think I may mock up the computer bracket and see what I've got to work with for my fuse box first. Would be glad to start getting this rats nest cleaned up though. I ran the brake line up to the front but I'm going to stop there for now. I've decided I want to mount a bracket on the fender and tie into bulkhead connections and use braided lines up to the proportion valve. I've got to get the inner fender in its correct spot to do that. Also I never squared the cab up because I need to pressure test the fuel lines first. That may affect my shift linkage, wasnt thinking of that when I hooked it up. I'm still waiting on adapters for the fuel filter.

I dug out my 02 sensors and opened my 02 bungs only to find bolts instead of what I ordered. So I'm probably going to hop around and tie up loose ends to keep forward progress. I bolted a bracket on the manifold where I didn't succeed in drilling the broken stud. Took longer to clean and tap out the dirt dobber nests than to install it. I haven't secured any of the lines I recently made to the frame yet because I need to blow them out, and I've got more wiring to the rear I need to address so I can decide on what clamps to use.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/821f9da74b0044c407318de927fcfd55.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/69b2b7169750839d320192b74fe0a449.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/06598732a91c739ce246e0096181ae1d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/f11f92d6bbb08f021527b58944f10761.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/051530eaecf9c0c65484905287f46a80.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/f6ab7c4b659b5ba988bef8ecdf8de616.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190817/2e690f5127050a5fdcd2525c5cb507bf.jpg)

not much to finish the day off with. spent alot of time chasing schematics and identifying wires coming off the bulkhead i didnt get too last time, thats not a fun task when computer images are blurry and thats all you have to work with. i wired this engine harness to be setup with digital gauges that i used on another truck. original plan was to use their OBDII module, so now im going to run a 3 wire sensor on the passenger side for now with the stock gauges using only the sender wire until i get around to ordering another dakota dash. same with the oil sender as much as i hate to, i may just rob that dash back lol. last few days seems like every step i take forward i hit a wall for completing something. ive miss placed the bolts and spacer for the steering gear. ended up using the power steering pressure hose on another truck previously and never ordered one to replace it. run out of wire to finish several other things up. bolts for rear lower shocks are too short. so put out another order of stuff again, will grab more bolts next run into the city. on a good note, i did some digging on the company i bought the 02 bungs from- they have 100percent good feed back and only sell 3 things, 2 styles of bungs and 02 plugs, which is most likely what they sent me. so waiting on them to reply back. just about everything ive ordered before today, and today will be showing up about the time i leave to phoenix arizona to watch the rolling stones concert so there will be another delay on updates, but not as long as i normally take when i leave for work unexpectedly. Until then i think i will focus on the wiring i can do from the engine harness to the cab. got an idea on integrating the 7 pin trailer wire harness in case i want to pull my car hauler behind it. and i need to look into the e-brake lines. last time i messed with them i realized the chassis i got was a different year setup, ill have to read back through my posts to remember that or research it again. i know i had to drill rivets out of a tab and bolt on the one off of the original frame.

So I've finally decided how I'm going to mount everything. The fuse box is upside down from how it will mount. I've got to hunt down some spacers for the bolts I'll be using. I'm going it get it tacked for now. Got some ideas for bracing it but not sure yet.

Dug out my new headlight connections. Upgrading to a relay setup, but I didn't realize I was going to get this style high beam connector. Got tired of trying to find these style terminals and just ordered another set without the wires. I'll try to sell or give these away if I cant.

Fuel injection hose & adapters, master cylinder adapters are supposed to be here tomorrow so I can pressure test the fuel system. I sure hope I flared everything correctly, I dont have any 3/8 line left if I dont have enough play to redo anything. Ended up with 10" leftover after I finished.

Spoke to soon on the master cylinder adapters, they just showed up. Well, I guess if I had know I was going to use this proportion valve I would have bought the MC they designed it to work with. So I wasn't sure how I was going to brace it when I was tracing out how I wanted it.. Luckily one of the trim pieces had the perfect angle, happened to line up good with the bottom mount, and only had to shorten it a bit. One of the plug connections is going to be tight so I will have to shim the mount up a bit for clearance on the fender. Was confident on what i come up with so I seal welded all of it, even what wasn't done on the bracket so no future rust will accumulate in there after painted. Couldnt find anything around the shop for spacers so just doubled up a few nuts for the fuse panel. Took off the fuel lines I recently made, blew them out and reinstalled. Going to bolt everything to it here shortly after it cools to see how it looks.

I'm liking how this come out. I've got room for busbars underneath. Only issue right now is I have to go to the bolt store tomorrow and find something shallower for the throttle control module... or get longer bolts and spacers for the computer. Luckily I've got a jam up bolt place in my town, they always got everything under the sun.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/919d7eeb812ef5825547c98f18dcc0f7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/2351facffd52324149e0285cecd154f9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/634cb3b6252cd1f06979f8b4e3ec4915.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/1874119b70307cf733207cc102e5f4dc.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190820/348fb92af83147bb94a1498164f618fe.jpg)

Got some upholstery work I've got to finish before I leave so somewhat of a hold up. But the fuel system tested great after some hiccups. When I was putting the fuel lines on I noticed the return line was loose. So, jacked cab up a bit, unhooked the suction line and tightened on  the return until I bottomed the nut out. I thought WTH... kind of hard to see. So pulled the whole thing out and the dang nut slide over the sleeve.

Chopped the flare off, luckily this-of all pieces-I could get away with doing that. Re-flare, reinstall, pressure test. Slight drop at filter-fixed. Retest... running good then sounds like pump drops into granny gear and is a bind...fuel everywhere. Leaking on the return line I just fixed but where the hose hooks up. Tightened the piss out of it and again the same. Some how, keeping this thing capped off from outside elements it had gotten clogged. 120 psi of air- gurgle in the tank, put it back together-works fine. Jumped leads to test driver tank, fingers crossed, won the lotto.

Not going to have any help to align the cab until next week so going to hit a few odds and ends until then.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190822/93b0c9216ff55d01f961daf125e8d9f3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190822/31b1801df5800a49091cd26b39db26f4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190822/a14b75a18b682f1af8579f254e726b2b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190822/e1c9cae7c89f3338114c8430bce41e7c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190822/191f1c9c7e4421ce288dbf6b8629969f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190822/9eb9d2c48e8623e62306cc62c43ffc47.jpg)

Nobody around this area carrys any type of nylon spacers... so how about them washers!!! Going to have to dig around online. Got the rear/bottom shock bolts on. Got to dig up a spacer for the steering gear, may just bolt it up for now without it. Also another look at that AN fitting...

Did some double checking and started drawing up a diagram for the fuse box yesterday. Got a few relay wires I need to change up for the fans in the fuse box. More on all that another day. Bolted up my tow bar to see how the holes line up, not liking how it fits. May end getting some brackets cut later on so I dont have to drill the frame. Only 2 holes lined up, the others are not in convenient spots to drill.

The nice new painted steering gear I've been waiting to put on is not the right one. I think it come off one of my dodges. I think I robbed the one I had a year or so ago when I rebuilt one for another truck. I have an extra, but it sat in the weather for along time so I'm not going to rebuild it. I'll just buy a new one.

Got the O2 bungs welded and installed. Not sure if I'll have another update. Will be in Phoenix for the next 4-5 days.

Well pheonix and the rolling stones was awesome, now back to the ole truck.

I haven't had any luck finding blueprints for the short bed wheelbase. But I think I've got it figured as close as I can to square the cab up before everything else gets bolted on. First off I used this blueprint and did the math to come up with 42" from back of the cab to centerline of the rear wheels. Used a square and straight edge off the O.D. of the axle and found center. Strung a string line across the front hanger spring bolts, come up dead square with the end of frame but not my centerline marks. So I thought about it a bit... got the degree finder out, leveled the frame best I could in all the some what flat surfaces of the rear frame within a degree or less. Put a square on the axle the old fashion way to finding center of pipe. Checked it both ways. Got a straight edge, lined it up with the center mark on the axle, put the degree finder on the straight edge and transferred my mark to the frame. Double checked my marks on the frame with hard points and looks like I'm within less than 1/16" square from the world. So tomorrow I'll have some extra help and we will get it lined up best as possible and hope it lines up good later down the road when I toss it all together. Hard to take pictures of all what I did, I'll get some tomorrow when the help shows up and we double check everything.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190831/460fca13069acf91d057e14f290f0538.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190831/75c1089073bca95da04072e196563a71.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190831/7a3ccf826e14d7395355bf3ba8f343ba.jpg)

So with the blueprints I found online for the longer wheelbase trucks and doing the math... no point that I measured was close to what its supposed to be except for the rear of the cab to the centerline of the axle. I've got 41 5/8" there and I come up with it supposed to be 42". 117.5 wheelbase - 75.5 CL front wheels to rear of cab = 42". The cab moves fairly easy and I've brain f*** this every way possible I'm going to leave it where it sits. I know the bed doesn't have a whole lot of play so I'll square it up and readjust everything from there if I have too. I just hope it doesnt effect the transmission lines later down the road. Had a few people look over what I've got, one agrees it's good to go, the other says I should align the holes up on the cab with the holes on the frame mounts next to the bushings, I think the second person is wrong because I did and it threw all the measurements out of square.

So on to progress... started routing front brake lines...

Made a new line to the proportion valve. Finally messed up on bending these lines, took me 2 times to get it right. The rear one I dont have a flare tool small enough to get it flared so it will have to wait.

Made a bunch of spacers, and bolted up the core support and inner fender to mock up wiring. Need to order some more heat shrink labels before I can cut everything to length and put weather pack connectors on. Going to focus on transmission lines tomorrow. Been a few but been busy. Decided another route on transmission lines so that's on hold for a bit. Haven't messed with the fuse box because my heat shrink labels haven't showed up. I think the hurricanes are affecting shipping on that and a few other things. Added a few buss bars on the bracket and stopped there.

So, i didn't like stock a/c mount location. Good thing I haven't tightened the water pump yet. Done fought a low mount compressor recently-that was heck. This one was still a pain being wide open. Got the new high mount bracket in today, they sent the wrong socket head bolt to mount to the head under the tensioner, so didn't get far on that. I'll get the right one Monday at the bolt house. Other than that, stripped the dash getting ready for upgrades. Decided to steal the digital dash back out of my other truck. I'll get another one later. Started running the fuel pump lines to the switch. In doing so remembered I dont have my labels yet and I've got several other wires I need to loom together with them so, hit a wall again. Hopefully parts will start showing up soon. Removed the stock gas pedal. Tomorrow I'll identify dash wires for the digital guages.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/ad6e88cd9253154b48b83919b9fa3e64.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/16ccc676d1298379e5c38d4f4eb2fdc1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/6da787b3e9f05688a9d9452cbbc90da4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/b50350e07504c98613fccf6d30302420.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/7857520806b9a41a0bb87a5c7fb6953b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/5039adc658b81b683f2f4c67a512709b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190908/2ac5eac10e9ace2f07481a29941058a3.jpg)
