I just recently purchased an 85 chevy k10 shortbed with a 305 in it. the truck is totaly stock. and other than the alternator that went bad the day i bought it the truck runs great. It has the original intake on it and i was wondering if i could put an open element on it. i ask because it has wat looks like a 1/2" a 3/8" and another verysmall hoses that connect to the intake that is on it now. does anyone know if it is even possible for me to put an open element on it or will it affect watever those hoses are attached to? ANd if I cant, does anyone know of a performance intake for it? Thank you

where are those hose coming out. it sound like the emison hose is the a breather element in side the air cleaner where one of the hoses hook up. and do the other hose go to the front or the rear of the intake. post a pic of what it looks like when it on and off the truck.

Kinda on topic: Is it OK to run an open element air filter on a TBI?

I've seen it done, not sure what changes (if any) you would have to make to get it to perform just right...
klaussk: You will need a breather for your valve cover and a cap for the thermostatic hose that you remove.

What is the tallest air cleaner element you can put on our truck without interfering with the hood?

Thanks guys. i went with the open element. and i put the breather filter on and capped the hos. it runs an awful lot better now.

Just flip the lid over

I flipped my lid for awhile when i put a bigger muffler on it. Didn't cause any trouble, but no noticable difference, except for the noise.

if your stock intake has the cold air hose on it and is working properly (so the engine gets air from outside the engine compartment) you will lose power and mileage going to an open element because the engine can only get hot air thats just gone through the radiator.
-
So a double cold air hose on a "stock" double intake tip (don't know really the name or that kind of intake, i know "HAULIN IT" has it on his truck) is better then an open element intake?
-
technically yes.

Here's what I did

Its a misconception that an open air element is better than the stock setup.

One of the powerblock shows did a how to on making your own dual snorkel, I think spectre makes an add on for them as well. They came factory on certain fbodys but they sell for alot usually.
