Title: What's in your pocket?...
Post by: JAH on January 30, 2020, 12:31:58 AM
***I joined this Forum a few years back, but am fairly new to the "posting" part.  So, I hope I'm not breaking any rules.  And furthermore, if I am, I hope that the Moderators will go easy on me.***

For as long as I can remember, I've had a knife in my pocket.  I carried a pocket/utility knife before the whole "EDC" thing became "cool".

Growing-up in the 70's, I can remember just about every "Blue Collar" guy with a sheath on his belt.

So, what's in your pocket?

"Dad" (RIP) was a Buck guy.  I can't remember him afield without his trusty Buck 110 and black leather sheath.  In fact, I have a hard time finding a pic of him (where his belt was showing), when his black leather sheath wasn't visible.  He dressed many a whitetail (and doves) with his 110s.  Back then, the Internet was pretty-much non-existent.  So, instead of taking advantage of Buck's "Lifetime Warranty", he'd just buy a new 110 about every 10 years or so.

I've carried many different blades (CRKT, Spyderco, Benchmade, etc.), but always seem most comfortable when I'm near my roots...a "Buck 110" of some form.

Since they were introduced, I've found myself enamored with the Buck "110 Slim Select(s)"...

I can blame my "two knife" approach on my Buddy, Jon.

In this day of "consummate victims" and "the easily offended", he suggested that I throw a "Gentleman's pocket knife" in my back pocket...so that I wouldn't have to go all "Crocodile Dundee" in the breakroom.  So, I've gotten in the habit of throwing a smaller blade in my "Copenhagen" pocket.

Here's a little Special Edition "The 55" action, just for "eye candy"...

when im about to go to work i cant carry anything (prison). when im out and about i usually carry a 4" blade clipped in my back pocket, doesnt really have to be a good name brand since i tend to lose them or someone moves them from my bowl (think the later lol). but no matter what it is i put an edge on it with a stone and it has to keep. i also carry a leatherman on my belt not sure what model it is since i got it at an auction for a few bucks and i norm carry cope wintergreen sometimes ill go with the straight.

I figured "truck" guys and "pocket knife" guys were like peas and carrots.  C'mon guys, show me your Medford, Case XX, Spyderco, CRKT, Kershaw, ZT, etc.

Here's another one of my Buck 110s to get us going...

Well, I'm about halfway through a "handle" of Jack.  So, I thought I'd add to this thread (even though it appears I'll be all alone).  :)

If you're a "Buck" guy, do yourself a favor, save your pennies, and score a Buck 110 "Auto Elite".  This is the knife Al Buck woulda' built, if he was alive today.  C.J. Buck is doing his Grandpa a solid by offering this...

I've caught an episode, here or there.  I'm a full-time (24/7) Caregiver for an Alzheimer's patient.  So, we usually watch what she wants. (The Cooking Channel, 48 Hours, Dateline, etc.)

I agree.  Getting old definitely ain't for wimps.

Sorry to hear about the AFib.  Our neighbor found-out about his when he passed-out while driving.  Apparently, his car did about two complete rolls before coming to a stop in a ravine.  Pretty scary stuff.

I looked-up the "Executive".  Nice piece.  Thanks for the post. 8)

I think that is what it was called 20 years ago,  but I couldn't find it. It has scissors, cork screw, lace tightened blade, Phillips and reg screwdriver, magnifying glass, that can't start a fire, tweezer, toothpick and 3 inch pen. Oh and a tiny screwdriver in the corkscrew to tighten my cheater glasses.

I'm pretty sure my maternal Grandfather carried Old Timers or a Case of some sort.  He had about three pocket knives (that would be referred to as "Gentlemen's pocket knives" these days) in his rotation.  I sure wish I had 'em.  I have my Father's last and second-to-last 110s, but nothing from my Grandfather.  :(

Speaking of "Gentlemen's pocket knives", I had my Buck 503 in my pocket, today.

If you're looking for a really nice little pocket knife, the 503 might could fill the bill.  For those who might be familiar with a Buck known as "The 55", the 503 is almost identical in size.  As you can see, it has a drop point, nickel silver bolsters, and Rosewood/Dymondwood scales.

The advantage of the Dymondwood is that it won't warp if you soap-&-water wash it (like I do most of my knives).  Also, the nickel bolsters don't tarnish as quickly as the brass, in my experience.

I’m not too old so I’ve only been carrying a knife for about 4 years and after going through quite a few different knives I am onto my second Kershaw link. My first one suffered a horrible life, it got dropped from the tops of semis, ran over, covered in water... it made it through it all and if it ever got dirty, a quick wipe with some lacquer thinner and viola it was new again. Then one day I dropped it in the parking lot when I was walking into work and I stuck it back in my pocket and two hours later when I went to use it the assisted open was busted so I ordered a new link. My new one has a serrated blade now.

Man, that's a heckuva' testament to that knife.  It sounds like Kershaw is treating you well.

I was on another Forum for quite some time.  It was like my local bar.  On weekends, I'd pour me a Jack & Zero, and hang-out in the truck and knife threads.  It was always interesting to read about the many different knives that the guys carried daily...and why.  The Kershaw "Leek" was real popular with a lotta' the Kershaw guys.

In regard to the Link, it's a great lookin' piece.  Despite being a diehard Buck guy, I've considered adding one to my knife collection.  If you get a moment, look-up "House of Blades".  They're a Dealer out of North Texas (DFW area, if I'm not mistaken).  Just like Copper & Clad offers Buck exclusives, House of Blades offers Kershaw exclusives.  They offer a line of Links that have "Blackwash" blades.  The blue one is a very sexy piece, in my humble opinion.

Speaking of Copper & Clad exclusives, here's one that might capture the eyes of some of you guys.

This is my C&C exclusive Buck 119.  Instead of having the black phenolic handle and 420HC blade that some of you may've seen, it has a red Micarta handle and S30V blade.  For my eyes, it's quite lovely...

That's a Ruger Super Redhawk "Alaskan", in .454 Casull.

It's probably just a bit bigger than a S&W Model 10.  ;D

I have a '94 Trapper and standard (4.2") Redhawk, both in .45LC.  So, for me, it was a no-brainer.  Considering that you can go to the moon with some of the modern .45LC loads, the .454 is definitely overkill for anyone other than folks who camp (or professionally guide) in Grizzly country.

Despite that, the Alaskan is a nice little "truck gun".  Throw it and a coupla' speed-loaders in the bag, toss the bag in the toolbox, and...if you have to overnight in the badlands...you're (literally) loaded for bear.  8)

The Case chrome vanadium blades will happily take an edge like nothing I've ever owned.  If you're careless with 'em, they'll gladly draw blood with little-to-no provocation.

They have a "personality", so to speak.  They change color and patina, depending on what you cut with 'em.  Every now and again, they get what I call the "blue flame" effect...

This was Buck's February 2020 "Buck of the Month".  It's a 55 with nickel silver bolsters, Granadillo wood scales, and an S30V blade.  The wood is part of the on-going "sustainability" partnership between Buck and Taylor Guitars.

I love my little Buck pocket knives, and just couldn't help myself...

Since I seem to be dancing with myself in this thread, I figured I'd bump it again.

This is a Case "Kickstart Mid-Folding Hunter".  The blade is their "Tru-Sharp" stainless steel (which I've heard is 440).  I think the scales are "Burgundy Kirinite", but can't recall for sure.

It's an assisted opening model, and reminded me (again) today why it's rarely in my pocket when, upon opening, the blade snagged on my shirt and took a nice chunk out of my thumb.  Nothing like grabbing a fresh pinch of Cope, for the next few days, and feeling like someone just tried to remove your thumb print by touching a soldering iron to it.

For my money, Case has become a bit inconsistent in their quality control.  I seem to remember my Grandpa's knives being much more well-made.  This knife came with a rolled edge and a pretty good deal of side-to-side blade play.  I'm still working on getting the edge where I'm happy with it.  My thumb tells me that we're almost there.

Neither Kirinite nor this particular blade shape even come close to being my usual tastes.  But, this knife is absolutely striking in person.  The pic doesn't do it justice.  When I saw it, I had to have it...

I had another Case "Kickstart" knife in my pocket, today.  It's a "Trapperlock".  I think the scales are "Amber jigged bone".  But, don't quote me on that.

I'm really not in love with these things.  But, they sure are purdy.  So, because I sometimes love pretty things, I'm forced to have a few of the Kickstart models in the rotation...  >:(

Texas has a history of illegal distillation, although not like most of the Prohibition/moonshine States.  And, that history, and the history of regulating booze, has stayed with us to this day...from the Local Option Laws of the late 1800's, to the early days of the "Liquor Board", to the modern-day Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

For those of y'all from other States (States where you can buy booze at the local grocery stores), this may not seem like a big deal.  But, here in the Great State of Texas, I was shocked to see this last night...

I went to grab some take-out for my Alzheimer's patient and I, from our regular "quick" Tex-Mex" joint, and found that they were offering margaritas in the drive-thru.  What???  I don't know if this is a recent thing (because of the pandemic), or something that happened over the last coupla' years (and I just hadn't noticed).  We've always had drive-thru beer & wine barns (usually out in the sticks), but nowhere that you could buy "to go" drinks made with liquor (like Tequila margaritas).

The price was stupid, but I thought, "The heck with it, I'll grab one, even if I don't drink it tonight."  So, I did.  The margarita was deconstructed, consisting of the frozen concoction, three (3) "airport" bottles of white Tequila, and salt & lime.  Since I didn't feel like drinking last night, I took it to my house and threw the frozen concoction in the freezer.

Tonight, I pulled the frozen concoction rock out of the freezer to enjoy my drink.  As it turns-out, a Buck 110 Slim Select makes a heck of an icepick.  Salud!...

I can't remember a pic of my Dad (RIP), out hunting, without the black leather "Buck" sheath on his belt.  I reckon that, from the time he was Honorably Discharged from the Army (1965), a trusty Buck 110 was his constant hunting companion (along with his BFF, his Brother-in-Law "Ed", also deceased).  In between four-to-five decades of hunting, and his Friends constantly asking him to teach their kids how to properly gut whitetail, he probably gutted and quartered over a hundred deer.  He was never a trophy hunter.  In fact, just the opposite, he was a "You eat what you kill" kinda' guy.  So, he and I would eat venison from about January thru March. (*By the time he passed, he'd become quite the Chef, and was one of the regular "Deer Camp" cooks)

He never took advantage of Buck's Lifetime Warranty, but preferred to just purchase a new 110, about every 10-or-so years, after he'd done his best to wear-out his last.

Here is his last "afield" 110 (1990 "X" stamp) with one of the modern 110 Slim Selects I tote quite often...like time travelling from "Classic" to "Modern"...

Yeah, it looks fine now.  But, last night, when I got done typing (and hit the "Post" button), a good portion of what I typed was missing in the post.  When I'd hit the "Modify" button, the text wasn't missing in that particular window.  It was pretty strange.  I guess I finally hit the Modify button enough that everything was included in the post.  Maybe a Server glitch?

Glock G42 fits right in the pocket. Used to carry a butterfly knife for years when I was younger.
Yeah, wish i could get the 42, thats a nice .380. But not in MA, not compliant. Carry a shield .40 instead, pretty darn close. Also, a guitar pick, and a real Schrade Uncle Henry pocket knife, the original USA ones made in NY. I also own some original Old Timers and of course the all time rare big boy, The Uncle Henry Bear Paw, LB7. Not many of these left.

That LB7 is very nice...almost identical to the venerable Buck 110 Folding Hunter.  And, I agree, there probably aren't many originals left.  I think they stopped production of the originals, after Schrade went Tango Uniform, shortly after the millennium.  You can find an LB7, but nothing like yours.  Perfect.

*Most knife guys seem to agree that the Buck 110 is the most imitated knife in history.  I can't think of one knife maker (including Shrade), from the 70's, that didn't try to get a piece of that action.

I bought that one in the late 90's, has never been used. Once a year i clean the brass bolsters and condition the sheath. I do have a Buck 110 that US Customs issued to me back in 2004, with the black leather sheath. They are both incredible in quality, legendary. Too bad Schrade closed their doors in 2004 after 100 years.

Which came first, the Buck 110 or the Imperial Schrade LB7?

The Buck had the Schrade by about 10-15 years.  Al Buck created the 110 in '63 or '64.  I believe the LB7 came-along in about the mid-to-late 70's.  Like many Manufacturers, Schrade was trying to capitalize on the popularity of the 110. (*Everyone quickly figured-out that they better have something to compete.)

I've heard that Buck has sold over 15 million 110s, since its inception.

Wow, that 110 sure is popular. I do remember when i was a kid back in the 70's, it seems every man and older teenager had one on their belt, w/ jeans and a white tshirt or flannel shirt and work boots. No man wore flip-flops back then, they didnt go with the buck 110!   Lol..

Oh, and most driveways had a square.

I guess I'm an "Idaho" knife guy.  ???

About 90% of the time, I have a Buck 110 folder on me.  And, should I choose to have a fixed-blade around, it's usually a TOPS. 8)

EDIT- Yes, the sheath looks brand new.  That TOPS Tex Creek (and its sheath) spend a lot time in my "truck bag"...along with a .45 pistol of some sort (either .45 ACP or .45 Colt).

Nice knife.  ~$850 USD, if I did my math correctly.

I can't say that I'd never pay that much for a knife.  But, there are so many wonderful and relatively reasonably-priced blades out there (now), that I'd have a really hard time paying as much for a knife as I could for a decent auto pistol.

It's obvious, from that link, that there are a lot of folks who have absolutely no issue with the price.  Heck, I know guys from other Forums who daily-carry $500 and $600 pocket knives.  I'm happy for the folks selling 'em, and the folks buying 'em.  For me, a $500 pocket knife is just a bit too deep for my shallow pockets.

This is fun. I’m not much for folding knives, but these two are in my back pocket every day that ends in “Y”...:

The Leatherman is their EOD offering. I haven’t had the occasion to use the plastic explosives punch... used to make the hole for the detonator, but I really like the replaceable wire cutters and actually have used the t-shank jigsaw blade a couple of times.
The utility knife is a Gerber and has saved me a lot of time sharpening a folding knife.

Lastly, I’ve got two of these:

You know... for protection... this one will live under the seat of the suburban when I get it done.
My uncle gave me the scabbard, with a MkI blade in it. The scabbard is the more expensive piece these days, finding a MkII blade was easy. This one is the true original, from Camillus, NY, before KaBAR took over the contract. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200509/adf5c45d5a02bac3a6c7272e3c20f03f.jpg)
I bought the KaBAR grip replacement kit and I’m happy with how it turned out. It’s a bit more ergonomically friendly than the original was.

You know Jeremy, if I wasn't a stalker follower of your posts, I would think you were a S.A.W. gunner in the Service.  I never met a S.A.W. gunner who didn't have a well-beaten multi-tool (Leatherman or otherwise) to keep that pile running.

I was never in the Military, but did find myself carrying a 249 Para in the suck, for a short time in '07 and '08.  One of the Recon Marines assigned to my Team handed me my Para S.A.W. and told me, "Make sure you mount a Leatherman or the like somewhere on your kit.  With this thing, you're gonna' need it."

I love seeing guys who only use a coupla' sharpy-type tools, but use them to death.  Me?  It'd take me about three lifetimes to make any of my knives look as well-used as your dailies.  First, I treat my knives better than I treat my only Brother.  And, because I have a few, they only make rotation about once a month or two.

My knives are tools.  I do use 'em.  But (for me), they are also like ties for an Attorney, or purses/shoes for the average gal...accessories.

EDIT- Thanks for sharing.  :)

I’m a big old boy... had I found myself in the military the chances are are about 100% I’d have been given a machine gun to carry. SAW in this era, M-60 in the previous, M-1919 before that. Maybe I’d get lucky in WWII and get a BAR instead. Either way a recruiter or DI would have me sized from go... “that boy can carry carry heavy things”.

Yeah JAH, those Bayley knives used to be about $600 usd. I always wanted one, but of course wont pay that much. I have been trying to find one close to it for a long time. Crazy thing, such a basic style and shape, i wish Buck would make a copy. If you or anyone ever comes across a knife similar, let me know.

Hey PB,

I didn't ignore your post.  In fact, it sent me down a memory-spiral that kinda' "plagued" me for days, if you will.  I think I burnt a few brain cells trying to access my memory bank.

I shop for knives almost as much as I shop for trucks.  Unfortunately, I'll be 50 this year.  So, my memory is about as long as my....ahem.  Anyhow, suffice it to say that I don't have the memory I used-to.

That Bayley is kind of a rare bird in that it (basically) has a "saw" on the lower edge.  I hesitate to call those "serrations", as they really don't meet my personal criteria for that definition.  That saw portion might be good in the rough.  However, it would keep that particular knife from being a good "all-around" blade as it really couldn't serve for any kind of protection.  Anything you stuck that knife into (whether two-legged or four), for protection, would basically "own" your knife at that point.  ;D

Beyond its obvious downfall (for my uses), that Bayley checks a lot of boxes for me.  When it comes to fixed-blades, I like about a <4.5" blade, with about a max 8.5" O/A length.  That is why I prefer many of the TOPS fixed-blades, as opposed to the Buck 119...along with the "working tool" factor of the TOPS offerings.

Anyhow, upon first viewing that Bayley, my mind initially drifted to an Ontario Knife Company offering.  It's quite different than the Bayley in a lot of ways, but equally as "odd".  It's a sheepsfoot blade, with the "saw" along the top edge.  But, on the plus-side, it ain't a $900 knife.  It's 1095 carbon, which translates to "easy to touch-up in the field".  Ontario makes decent knives.  And, at $40 USD, it oughta' be pretty hard to resist.

I give you the "Journeyman"... (*Plus, it's ad'ied on the bedrail of a truck...quite fitting for this group, in my humble opinion. ;))

Anyway, in case anyone wants to know what a Bayley looks like.

ESEE makes an "ESEE 4"  that is serrated.  It doesn't have the more aggressive "saw tooth"-type design of the Bayley.  However, it does have standard serrations.

The ESEE knives are OUTSTANDING pieces of equipment.  And, it just so happens that the #4 happens to be my favorite design.  In my humble opinion, it is an incredible value.

It is a 1095 (carbon steel) knife.  So, like an axe or froe, it will need a little oil on the edge.  But, those "in the know" will tell you that 1095 is the way to go for venturing into the wild...for many reasons.

Here's a look...

When I first saw your post, I thought there'd be no way I'd try something that I couldn't buy locally.  But, according to their Site, the H.E.B. store about a half-mile from my house stocks the stuff.  I'll give it a try...see how it mixes with Mr. Daniel.  Thanks.

As far as the HF survival knife, there are about 5-10 YouTube vids of folks pounding those things.  I'm glad it worked-out for you.  Lol.

Springfield champion. Alloy-framed, so it’s LIGHT! for a 1911...
It’s too light to be much fun shooting... the full-sized, steel framed guns are better in that regard, but the slim profile means I can reasonably conceal the gun on my person.

Nice .45, Jeremy.  I have a feeling you and I could be good Friends, if you were closer.  I'm a 1911 guy myself, albeit with a prejudice for steel frames.

In other news, one of my blades bit me about 10 days ago, in a moment of carelessness.  That was all it took.  And, yes, that was down to the bone...

Super 33 E-tape, best bandaids ever invented.

I’m definitely with you on steel-framed 1911’s... and for actual shooting I’d take a full-size, all steel gun every day.

I bought the champion BECAUSE of the light weight. It’s for carrying.

If I ever hit the lottery, one of my first purchases will be a pair of Ed Brown 1911’s, chambered in .38 Super. They’d be good bookends for the M1A SOCOM or Scout rifle I would also have.

I’m fully aware that people other than John Moses Browning designed firearms... I’m just not really sure WHY?!?

Thanks for the recommendation on the 3M tape, Jeremy.  I think I'll run down to my local hardware store and score me a roll.  I'm like the "Steve Urkel" of edged tools.  I probably draw blood from myself about once a week.  Luckily, most are pretty superficial.  That being posted, the above cut was the worst I've had since I was in my teens. >:(

I agree with you on the JMB thing.  Despite my upbringing and background, I have little girly hands.  So, the 1911 has always been a perfect fit for me.  I have some pretty large revolvers, and a Glock 21 was my first LE gun (in a past life).  Despite that, the weapons of the 1911 variety have always been the perfect fit for me.

In regard to your "Ed Brown" lust, do yourself the favor of fondling a Dan Wesson "Specialist".  I've shot about every 1911 offered, from Colt to Baer to Wilson to Springfield.  And, the Specialist (in my mitts) is an absolute thing of beauty.  It's an AMAZING chunk of steel.

Should I hit my numbers I’ll do that... guess I’ll need to start playing the numbers. The reason I know I lust after the Ed Brown is a friend had one. Nicest gun is ever held to that point. I’ll look into the Dan Wesson... should I hit the lotto or have some other windfall.

This is the latest addition to my TOPS collection.  It's a Baja 4.5 "Reserve Edition".

I have a Baja 3.0 that is on my belt pretty regularly...WAYYY regularly, in fact.  The 3.0 sees me through my daily tasks of cutting sandwiches, opening feed bags, and cutting baling wire.  It (the 3.0) takes and holds a wonderful edge.  So, when I saw this 4.5 "work of art", I had to have it.

A few years back, I did some ranch road and sendero shredding, out at a Ranch in South Texas.  About an hour after leaving, I realized I left a hose bib (well water) running, at the behest of the land Owner.

Before returning to the Ranch, to turn-off the water, I stopped by a nearby Friend's house to grab a .357 revolver.  The Ranch took a VERY different look after sundown. (*Feral hogs, coyotes, rattlesnakes, illegal aliens, etc.)

After that experience, I promised myself that I would never be that "helpless" again.  I decided to put-together a "truck bag", with my basic necessities (*in the event I ever got caught-out in South Texas, alone, again.)

Here are a few of my favorite edged tools, that regularly occupy my "truck bag", in the event I ever have to make a "night" of it...
