Title: Help with over heating
Post by: derrik.kasinger on December 10, 2017, 01:06:25 PM
I have a 89 SBC 350 I can't keep cool. I have rebuild whole motor and new water pump. Fan clutch the whole 9 yards. the truck keeps over heating. I am only running a alt. Power steering and water pump and crank I have taking pic of how the belt is routed can any one tell me if I am spining the water pump backwards and how to fix this problem. The belt goes over alt. Under water pump to power steering. Over power steering to beneath crank back to alt.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171210/9c10b0336fb77191793ff58e63b0cfe2.jpg)

Did it overheat before the rebuild?  Where is the upper fan shroud?

did you get the reverse rotation water pump for the serpentine belt setup you have?

See pic which shows you have the belt on wrong.

This is probably the problem

I don't think any of these diagrams match derrik.kasinger setup as he does not appear to have a belt tensioner in his setup whereas all four diagrams include a tensioner pulley

I didn't look closely enough at his picture. You are right.

Still, there is insufficient contact between the W/P pulley and its drive belt... something's not right in River City.  Cobbled together, perhaps?  I think we need a little more info on when the overheating began ...and what happened to the shroud.

I did a bit of google imaging and couldnt find a picture of a setup like this. It looks like all the pulleys are from a factory serpentine setup but with the alternator on the side it would be with a Vbelt setup. and minus the AC compressor and the belt tensioner. soooo thats why the water pump pulley is barely getting touched by the belt

Derrick's CW crank rotation will impart CCW rotation of the water pump shaft, which is consistent with Vile's belt installation image.  So water pump rotation would appear to be correct.  Don't know if reverse rotation pumps are common, but if Drerrick got one that could be the issue.
Take off the radiator cap while cold, fire it up, give it some gas, the radiator level should drop a tad if the pump is doing its job.

Assuming that is ok, it could be that the missing shroud is not allowing the fan clutch to get hot enough to lock in.

Usually if they overheat while sitting still or driving slow it's an airflow issue

If they overheat driving 50 mph it's a water flow issue since you don't need a fan at that speed to move air thru the rad

To Test the fan and airflow thru the rad
With it idling hold a square of tissue paper against the rad
It should stick and stay due to the airflow
If it falls down you don't have enough air flow
And missing the shroud will definitely cause low airflow thru the rad

derrik.kasinger you make any progress on this issue?
