Well I finally purchased my dream estate. Not much looking at it but I have big plans and a vision of what can be. First things first is my shop/garage/temporary living quarters... Room enough in the back yard 29' from the house is going a 32x40 garage. They are digging the footings as I type. Here is after I removed the shed this past weekend before they started digging. The white oak has to go... 2nd picture is the house view. Garage is behind the house and almost smack dab in the center of 19.53 acres

Congratulations on the purchase! It sounds like you have a solid plan that will turn out very nice. Well done!
-
Awesome! You'll run out of room before you know it and be putting up a shed too lol
-
Congrats Carl!!! It is very nice to have a shop to work in.

Haven't measured the pole barn yet that came with the property but it seems to be about 30x50. Been out there arranging stuff today, got beautiful sun and upper 50's

That was my first thought too........make it 32 by 60.........but you'll still run out of room :)

40 wide is all I could go. If you look at the first picture, we had to drop a size-able white oak. Beyond that it goes down hill pretty fast and I am 21' from the house as it stands right now. Here is the pole barn also on the property. 32x48, needs a little TLC but keeps the weather off my trailer and flat bed
-
if it was 80,000 sq ft I'd still run out of room!
-
Day 3, foundation forms finished and walls poured. Dreary day and was a little slick out walking but they got er done. Tomorrow is the rock drive and base for the floor...
-
Congratulations. You will have the perfect set up with a garage & that pole barn. Having that barn that will fit your truck & trailer is priceless.
-
Day 4. Ready for the floor tomorrow
-
Concrete completed. Now for a weeks cure before the fun begins

Nice, did you run expansion joints around the perimeter? I did with mine as well as inside and outside curtain drains and used fiber mesh. Not one crack in my floor :) It also has a nice pitch as well so water will drain to the doors. If I could do anything different it would be a heated floor and plumbing drains but I got divorced right as I was in the middle of my build so i had to make some cut backs, maybe in my next life.
You must be excited! Are you putting lift(s) in your garage?

expansion joints are being cut next week. They did add fiber mesh to the mix. No floor drains but the door opening is pitched. I am on a big hill so no water problems. I do have it plumbed for a 3/4 bath. I am super excited. My first shop. No more working out on a gravel drive...
-
and yes a lift
-
Excellent! Making much faster progress than I did with mine. I pretty much was the sole contractor though! LOL
-
3/18 update. Almost done framing walls, will finish that up Monday and start the trusses.
-
Got a 1/2 day in before the rain started...
-
Trusses over 1/2 done
-
Today's 1/2 day update

Cool, one bay door? Making good progress

Yes 12x8 door. Thanks, they are moving right along on it...
-
Congratulations!! It's coming along really nice. Looks like you need a sliding glass door out the back so you can hunt from the comfort of your heated shop. LOL. We're going to meet with some builders in the next few months to see if we can build what we want, how much it would be, and if we could build it in stages. We're considering combining a house in the shop. I hope yours turns out to be everything you hoped for. It's gotta be exciting to see it coming to life!

Thanks, me too. A lot of thought and consideration was made as to placement and that limited the size which hopefully will help keep the cost down. Still will cost way more than I had hoped as the building materials have doubled in the last 20 years. Here was a quick few pictures taken between rain showers yesterday. Last picture standing out the garage door opening looking in

Nice progress!

After a rain out yesterday and rain shortened day today, it is looking like a garage more and more.
-
That looks great.
-
i have to say this does make me want to rip my garage apart just to make it bigger lol.
-
Lots more rain but almost all sided. What a muddy mess
-
Zieg,
You must smile every time you look at that garage.
Congratulations, it looks great.

Sure do, just came in from moving left over building material around. Still waiting on the garage door so I can start to move the electrical supplies in to start on it... Everything else is pretty much done. My wife hasn't picked out the color yet. Here it is as it sets
-
Looking good!

Well got my garage door the end of May
-
My brother, his son, my oldest son came 300 miles and my cousin came out to insulate, install all my pegboard and most of the trim on the inside. A 2+ days of family time. What a transformation. I will finish trimming out the other 4 windows and start electric next week.
-
Nice runyerselfover machine. That brings back memories.
Where are you putting your lift? I just retrofit all of my fluorescent lights to LED last week. Got sick of the 400 monthly electric bill. What are you doing for shop lighting?

Zeig85 is living dream! Congrats Sir!

I traded an old Snap On bottom box for that Honda. I use it to go to the mailbox, drag the garbage can to the road and drag the lawn cart around. Couldn't see the money for a 4 wheeler. I basically only have 3 new tires in it and starts on first pull
leaning toward https://www.samsclub.com/sams/linkable-10pk/prod21062241.ip for lights. My son is going to recalculate but probably do 3 rows of 4 on 3 switches.
I am thinking about getting a drive-on Backyard buddy 9000 lb. with all the attachments to roll it around. Going to place it on a slight angle to where the red truck is. Open for suggestions on a lift. Backyard buddy is in Ohio and I can pick it up to save on freight and 100% American made.

What's your ceiling height?
the nice thing about LED is you can rewire any fixture to make them work as they don't use a ballast. I would recommend frosted bulbs if you do go with LED otherwise I think they are too bright. A few wall mounts are good too near the lift.

Ceiling height turned out being 12'5"
-
I'd recommend a wide 10,000lb asymmetric lift. Rotary is nice but see what your local guy can get you. For a drive on, you'll need air jacks too, you'll lose the height of the ramps plus jacking which means with a 12.5 ceiling height losing valuable space. I like to be able to walk underneath without slouching.

I concur with the vile one, my son picked up a used one for 1500.00.

I just finished my shop last summer and I love it (24x40). That's as big as the city would let me build ,codes and all. But I put a 10x18 door on one end and one on the side at the other end to get a breeze in the summer. Also half the roof I put scissor trusses so I can put a car lift in one side. The other half I will use for storage. The walls are eleven ft tall. A car port off the side is a great addition to be outside with out being in the weather like painting parts or using a grinder with lots of sparks or a good spot for a bbq :-) . Have fun with it and congrats.
-
hey vile you have any pics of your before and after lights? in my garage i have 6 8' dual Fluorescent lights. 4 out of the 6 need ballast, looking at LED bypass bulbs, im worried about them being too bright and them being too dim. i see theres "v" shape bulbs but thats going to be over $200 then thats where i start thinking they might be too bright
-
They aren't too bright, just get frosted bulbs. You can buy them on eBay so as long as your tombstones are in good shape just rewire them and pop the bulbs in. I even did my beer sign I picked up for $20 bucks

Ah, the gold old days when beer was cheap... Wonder what 6 pack cost 1.55? OE800? ;)
-
I have 3 rows of 5 each lights and it is really bright. If the specs are correct I am getting 72K lumens for 610 watts of power. I have about 2/3 of my parts hanging, more to come

I engineered my lighting in my shop using Cooper Industries free Photometric software. Everyone who has been in it comments that there is a lot of light, which is what I wanted, but I also measured the real lighting with a phone app that measures light intensity and it came out very close to the simulations.
I have (8) 48" high-bay, 6-tube T8 fixtures lighting up the main bay of 32 x 30.

My son was the electrical dept manager at Menards and figured out what I needed, the spacing for detailed work specs. I am happy how it all worked out. My wife found a deal on Amazon, had free prime shipping. They ended up being under $23/fixture
