Operation 383

So after lending my truck to a friend he brought it back with an engine knock, so I decided it was time for an upgrade. the truck originally has a 305 in it but I wanted to do a 383 stroker.  I know it's a very common engine, but here in Alaska gas is really expensive so I didn't want to a 454 even though I was very tempted. so I finally got the engine together, and some of the things I did were, and parts I used:

Bored over .030
Ported and polished heads
Stainless steel valves
Comp cams springs (don't remember the spring rate right now)
Comp cams roller rockers
Comp cams flat hydraulic cam (don't have the specs right now
Speed pro flat top pistons
Bunch of other stuff I can't remember right now

I had to do a bunch of grinding, heads mostly but that was expected. I only had to clearance the block in a couple of places for the crank, I had to grind a little behind the cam gear too because it was binding. I guess I'll post a bunch of pictures now hah:

Got the intake manifold on, it took tons of work to clean that up! It was covered in muck and grim



Got all the chrome on now she's just waiting for a carb, fuel pump, water pump, and clutch

Yeah got a stroker kit from summit, it's eagle which I'm not a fan of but next time I'll probably go piece by piece

I'm actually I'm the market for a stroker kit. I thought about piecing mine together but don't you have to have everything balanced.

I think you mainly have to check how the crank is balanced. But with performance applications you should get it balanced anyways.

Hey bro-are you in Ak? Looks like it from your post, don't wanna be capt obvious. Did summit absolutely murder you on the shipping? That's what I been getting from any company I order anything from...maybe a few tips you could offer if you got some back doors somewhere...

I have a 406 I am going to be going through pretty quick...had my crank already done by a shop in ANC already so now its a matter of gettin motivated...what is your est hp?

Ya I'm in AK, I did get absolutely raped on shipping, I wish I did have a back door or a hookup, but I bought my stroker kit at $800 something and paid like $1000+ with shipping, it sucks.

I honestly don't know on the hp though I'm hoping to get around +/- 400, but I don't know, I calculated my cr at 9.9:1 hopefully with that, and my radical cam I'll be around that ballpark

I'm looking to get that same kit. I was also looking at the Scat Stroker Kit.

I actually had a tool box shipped up from seattle for 90 bones. It was free shipping in the conus-what I did is called a freight company in the area: American Fast Freight. They are based out of the seattle area. You can actually google them. You call them with the dimensions and weight, and they call you back with a quote. Sometimes its good, other times not so much...been thinking about doing the same thing with a kit for my 406. We'll see. What are you jabbing that thing in again?

Oh yea? That's a good idea, too bad I don't think I'll have anything else big to send up here before I leave. I'm putting it into my 86 k10, I'll post some pics a lil later.

Good to see another Alaska member.  I'm in Anchorage.  Nice work.  Where was the machine work done 'cause I see a lot of nice equipment around that purty engine!  lol  And do you work there?

I built it at the auto craft shop on FT. Richardson, they have a seasoned engine builder with tons of tips and advice, and he machines. no I don't work there it's just an auto shop with lifts and tools that soldiers can use.

Just ordered a Holley carb and some other fuel stuff last night, should come in tomorrow... Had to pay 48.95 to ship it. But I was searching around town and I found Holley 650, and 670's that cost more than the 750 I bought even including shipping
