Transmission conundrum - 4L60 vs 4L60E vs 4L80E
« on: December 05, 2017, 11:07:08 AM »
I know this is a dead post, but I'm curious does the 4l60e require a stand alone computer? I'm looking at upgrading my 83 GMC w/5.7 and a 400turbo? I think. I know it's only a 3 speed right now. To move to 4 speed, I can put a 700 in without changing anything(or so I've been told) but 4l60e are far more common and cheaper around me. What am I getting myself into by choosing the 4l60 I've 700?

4l60 needs a computer. If it's a 3/4 ton or you do multiple tows, a 700 or 4l60 is not the best. A 4l80e is a better choice. The 4l80e is the 4 speed overdrive version of the th400.

I just started looking into the 4l80e actually lol. I don't tow or plan to do very much except maybe a boat. What type of proceeded am I looking at if I do decide to go with the 80? Is it real expensive or complicated? I found a 92 4l80 for 550 I think it has 120k on it.

You'll still need a computer, but a standalone is easier to find for the 80e, likely looking at around 1200 tops for both a computer and used tranny.

700R4 and 4L60 are one in the same

4L60E & 4L80E are electronic and require the use of inputs sensors, associated wiring and a computer albeit standalone or factory.

there is no 4L80

Ok. I think I'll stay away from installing a computer. I recently found a 700r4 which I'm told was removed from a 92 but the guy doesn't know the mileage.

A 700 from 92 is probably gonna need a computer but I don't know for sure

They made the 700 a few years with no computer
Just a vacuum line but I'm not sure what years

My 82 c10 diesel has a 700 with no computer

I have a 700R out of a 91 Corvette in my 37 Chevy PU.......no computer needed. A 92 might be different though.

Mid to late 92 was the first year for a 4l60e (electronic shift 700)

No vacuum on a 700, but does require a correctly set TV cable-improperly set can and will fry a transmission in less then 10 miles.

The TCC lockup cn be set up several different ways-best to do a search, and start reading-there are lots of ways to do it, some better, some easy, some probably not good for a mild street truck.

Ok. I was lead to believe that all 700s are mechanical shift. And the 4l60e is the 700 electric shift. Is it stamped on the case or is there a tell tale sign for which on it is? I'm looking to get this one for 150 and maybe rebuild it before I even put it in. I have a regular daily driver. Nothing over the top for power.
