I have a 1978 2wd long bed (305 v8, 350 turbo trans)
Engine is weak
I've been contemplating a LS swap, and have an opportunity to
Get a 2001 GMC van with a 5.7 350. The engine was replaced by the dealer 6 years ago and has 60,000 on it now.
The frame rotted on the van and it is not driveable.
Engine sounds perfect.
I am totally new to LS swaps
Is this a good option year (2001) for this project?
Looking for best option year/engine for successful swap.
Any insight is appreciated

Well that's a vortec 350. Its not a LS engine. I wouldnt think it would be very difficult to just convert that engine to a carb and run it on your truck as is. But I'm no expert and dont know alot about carb stuff or the vortec 350

How about if I left the EFI on it instead of going with a carb
Would the wiring (computer) be somewhat painless?
Am I better of holding out for a LS engine? I want to do it right once.
The guy wants $1000 runs perfect

Painless maybe. I'm not sure on that computer wiring. I personally, just my opinion, would get a LS (whatever displacement you want) and with whatever transmission that comes with it. The wiring isnt bad unless you get an e78 ecm which is only found in 2011 and up 2500 and 3500 gas Vans and trucks. The wiring for other ls engines should be fairly straightforward due to the amount of internet support and guides. That is if you want to keep your factory ecm.
If you want to go efi you'll need to get a baffled fuel tank as well from my understanding. An 87 truck tank should work for you (I dont know about how it would fit though. I'm not familiar with anything but an 87).

The 87-91 RV series tanks will fit on the CK frames. I put a set on my 76.
If you want decent fuel injection... I'd hold out for a real LS motor. 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L

The 4.8 LS has about twice the power of a worn out 350
But you’re on the right track
You want the whole donor vehicle so you can take what you need and sell the rest
It usually cheaper to buy the whole vehicle than just the engine anyway
