I think that the "pre-1976" language has to do with emission requirements.  in other words, if you stick this engine in a 1984 truck it will not meet the emission standards from 1984.  I am not sure where you are.  In Texas a 1984 truck is exempt from any emission testing.

Our truck has this motor: http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet+Performance/809/19301294/10002/-1 (actually an earlier version, but very close).
Frankly, if I had it to do over, I would spend a bit more and swap a fuel injected engine in.

Do you think 400 horse would be too much power for just an occasionally driven truck to the deer lease or just driving around town for a weekend toy that's never going to be lifted it's basically stock? if I'm not mistaken it came from the factory with 190 horsepower.

It would probably be overkill.
This would be a step up from factory: http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet+Performance/809/12568758/10002/-1
This would be a factory replacement: http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet+Performance/809/10067353/10002/-1
