'77 scotsdale 1/2 to 3/4
« on: May 10, 2007, 11:48:39 PM »
hello all,
i am looking for some info on an upgrade i am wanting to complete. i have a 77 Chevy Scottsdale 1/2 swb. 350/th-350/NP 203/front d-44, rear 12bolt gm corp. what i am wanting to do is swap in a NP205 and the axles from a donor 79' 3/4 t lwb. the donor 205 was mated to a sm465 manual tranny, what all am i going to have to change? next, i am wanting to know if the front axle from the 3/4 t is a d44 or d60. the hub is necked down at the locking mechanism at the end. i am guessing it is a 44. i have read that these are referred to as hd 44's. what is the difference between the two? any mods to the axle shaft or the pumpkin? if it is (44) i am thinking of holding out for a Dana 60. on the Dana 60 non-dually, are the spring perches narrower than on the 44? next, are the steering boxes different, same for the brake master cylinder and booster? should i swap these out?
ultimately the drive train i am wanting is 700r4 (because of the overdrive), NP 205, Dana 60 front, gm corp 14 bolt rear.
thanks for the help guys. stay safe.

I see this is your second post so first off welcome from New Hampshire.
A Dana 44 is the exact same wether its in a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. The only difference is the 6 or 8 lug. A 3/4 ton never came with a 60 , they were only in 1 tons. The 79 could possibly be a 10 bolt. Not sure what the official GM year is that they went to it, but over the years I have run in to a few original 79s that had 10 bolts and some that had 44s. That is right in the transition period.
Not sure on the spline count but am 9.9 % sure the TH350 has a smaller diameter out put shaft than the SM456. You will need to change the input shaft in the 205 to fit the TH 350. I am positive the output on the 700R4 is smaller than the SM456, but don't know if they are the same as the TH350..
The front spring perches are the same distance apart for all K and V series trucks, Blazers, & Suburbans. The dually or single rear wheel has nothing to do with the width of the front perches. As far as the rear goes the cab and chassis 14 bolt housing are narrower than the pickup 14 bolts.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
