Title: Distribuator for new 383
Post by: fast823 on April 22, 2009, 11:19:44 AM
The ol chev is going to be going in for a 383 in the next week or so and I think I need a new distributor. I just bought the moroso cap and wires. What do you guys suggest I get. Go to the junk yard or get a new one that is electronic? Thanks,

I bought a new $130 Mallory HEI distributor last year. I think it's great and it's a little bit different from the usual MSD you see. But either way, you can buy an all-new HEI distributor for around this price. It's worth it. I've spent almost the same amount before on a new cap and coil for my stock HEI.

If it spends most of its time on the street look for a distributor with a vacuum advance.

I run an MSD HEI in my engine, but if I were to do it all over again I would save the money and simply rebuild my stock HEI with this kit: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PNX%2DD8000&autoview=sku . In addition to a performance coil, module, cap, rotor, and adjustable mech advance kit, this kit also includes an adjustable vacuum advance, which my high dolllar MSD unit does not.

With an aftermarket coil and module, HEI's are good performance distributors.

It not a really a street machine. It is my pick up for working on the farm and doing farming stuff.  Thanks for the info.

Not knocking what eventhorizon is saying, but this is the one I have:

And for only $35 more than the Pertronix kit, you get an all-new HEI with adjustable advance and no mistakes to be made swapping parts back to the stock HEI. I'm surprised at the price hike though. Mine was cheaper, and in Canadian dollars. Go figure with what a year later does.

At any rate, there are inexpensive options out there.
