Any info about dually trucks?
« on: April 08, 2008, 08:47:26 PM »
I am looking at trying to sell my 87 R-10 off and buy what appears to be a 1983 to 1986 GMC 1 ton dually.  It has 4.56 gears, a 4 speed and a 350.  The body looks very nice and the price is right.  The guy is asking $1350.00 for it.  Near as I can figure, even if the motor is not as good as what is stated, or is blown up for that matter, 1350 is not a bad price.  What I am wondering is if there is anything special to look for in these trucks over the half tons I am used to?

i'm in the same boat as you;  i'm also looking for a 1ton, but mine will be preferrably crew-cab and diesel.  You're lucky to find the truck for 1350.

i would guess the extended fenders need to be checked for cracks as they are fiberglass(i think?), and i think that was/is a somewhat common problem with dually trucks.  But even if the fenders are cracked, are you going to pass the truck up just because of that?  i wouldn't either.  So, what is the remedy?  i'm not sure;  Tape?

Also, try to find out what the prev. owner used the truck for.  If for towing, as many of these trucks were purchased for, then the transmission will need to be checked extra carefully.  i'm not real familiar with manuals, but unusual noise(s) would be a start.

i will add more as i learn more.

Nothing special on a CREW as far as body goes, I would check the suspension as it was probably loaded down alot.
