Title: 73-87 Fuel tanks
Post by: Dusty6.0 on April 01, 2018, 10:30:13 PM
Is there a difference between the gas tanks starting from 73-87 swb trucks? Reason I'm asking is because I did a ls swap in my 74 c10 using an 87 fuel tank for efi use. Now my truck is a stepside and when I say my bed back on the frame I noticed the right bed side was lined up on the fuel inlet where fuel filler line mounts to. It's impossible to get it seat. Even though that tank is a tbi 87 tank I used my oem gas tank straps. Is there any difference? I know all swb tanks are 16 gal. What about difference between stepside and fleetside?

Pictures? Did you compare your old tank to the new one before installing?

No unfortunately I didn't on both occasions. It's at the paint shop. It was going to another shop. That's how I knew. I didn't think nothing of it if I knew there was going to be a problem

Sounds like the tank is in the incorrect position.

What do you mean by that? You think I can wiggle it around?

From what you describe it just sounds like it is improperly installed or positioned.

I put an '81 bed (with gas tank doors) on my '75 (no doors), and I had to get the fuel filler tubes and hoses off the '81 to make it fit.   The tank is in the same place, but the filler tubes are mounted at different angles.

AFAIK, the tanks have always been mounted the same over the years, and if the bed is still in the right place it should line up.   The later year EFI side tanks added internal baffles for the pump, but are supposed to be the same size.

On my long bed, if you look through the space between the bed and cab, about 1/3 of the sending unit plug is hidden under the bed, and about 2/3rds is visible.  I can see 2 out of 3 fuel line connections. I don't know if that is the same alignment on a short bed.
