Do we have a Variable Displacement compressor?
« on: August 06, 2009, 10:15:45 AM »
I have learned that the most efficient air conditioning compressor is called a variable displacement compressor. Anyone know if that is the type that came on our old trucks? And if not, what type of conversion is needed to convert to a variable displacement compressor? I live in texas, so probly about 2/3 of the year my AC needs to be running unless I want to be all sweaty by the time I get to where I'm going. Even in the mornings sometimes it's so humid you sweat as soon as you go outside. So it would be cool to have the best most efficient AC compressor possible.

No they do not. Yes you can retrofit to a vdot system but you'd need a donor with bracketry and a serpentine belt system.

Googled it but came up with nothing. I take it that it is off something newer, but what? What year do I need to be looking for at the junkyard for the full conversion including all the brackets and all the needed stuff. Those guys at the junkyards don't know jack, usually.

Any V6 4.3L or V8 SBC V5 set up should work.

Ok. Well now I would like to get your opinions on how much of an efficiency increase that would actually be. I know i have seen a lot of guys do that swap, if only to get the serpentine belt out of it.
