600 CFM Holley big enough for a stock 454?
« on: April 08, 2008, 11:47:50 AM »
I currently have a edelbrock carb on my 454 chevy motor.  It's acting up.  Not sure of the cfm, have to look it up yet.

I have a brand new 600 CFM Holley 0-1850 Carberator with vacuum secondaries and electric choke.

Is the 600 CFM Holley going to work on a stock 454 motor, at least till I can get a 750?

I think 600 might be a bit on the small size for even a stock 454. I would run at very least a 670 CFM holley. & no more than 750.  Im not sure what intake your using, if its something along the lines of a performer intake, the 670 would work good, even better with a 1" open spacer to give it more plenum volume

Is it a stock 454, and you don't plan to spin alot of rpms?

Yes, as far as I can tell, it is totally stock.

It has stock manifold, and most of the emmisions crud was removed.

It probably won't see a lot of rpms, mostly just putzing around in the woods, and some highway driving.

Blast, You will be fine with the 600, not enough for higher RPM's, but good enough for "puttin'"

Cool.  I'll put the Holley on then.

Good thing too, the Edelbrock is really bad today.  It ran fine two days ago.   This morning it idles fine, but put it under load, and it's constant dry spot and airry sounding, no power at all, then once in awhile a big squirt of power comes through and lasts for 2-3 seconds, then back to no power and airry sounding again.  I put a new fuel filter on, and no difference.  I could feel a small pulsation in the fuel line, so I think the fuel pump is doing something anyways.  The weather is high humidity today, was raining then turned to snow, so it could be the weather, but jeeez, not this bad.

I finally looked at the carb model number that's currently on there, it's a 1406, 600 CFM.  ::)

I might do that, I got a few Holley's laying around.

Here's a question, should I be able to pinch a rubber fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb with my fingers and be able to totally stop the fuel supply?  I can pinch off the rubber hose with my fingers easily while the engine is running, and I feel just a small frequent pulse.  I'm wondering if my fuel pump is failing.

If it's really mushy I would replace it with a suitable replacement fuel line. If you think you have inadequate fuel volume, just pull the hose off the carb and disaable the ignition system. Crank the engine with the hose in a glass jar and observe how much fuel you get in 15 seconds.

As far as your 600 on a 454, be careful... if it's calibrated too lean you can ruin your engine. Make sure it doens't ping or start running hotter.

Usually stock, Holley's may run a lot richer. In fact, on a 454, it may even be more so since the booster signal should be higher. Take off the top of the edelbrock also and see if it's got a bunch of fine dirt in the bowl. Mine did that a couple times because this new "gas" was either picking up dirt in my gas tank or the tanks where I buy fuel.

Just put the Holley on, and it works like a charm.

No dryspot whatsoever now, and I have all my power back under load.  ;D

Here's the funny thing, when I was emptying the gas out of the old Edelbrock, I found a cut off end of a ziptie in the secondaries.  ::)

Zip tie eating carburetor eh? Glad to hear you got it running good. I've found lots of wierd things inside engines over the years. I once found a human tooth inside a transmission pan!
