Nice work man, I'm working on the same year and model.

Search 'that 1980 c10 I keep talking about' You'll see familiar pics... ::)

The seam on your firewall appears to have rust. Since you pulled the engine, it might be a good time to wire wheel, grind, and sand the rust from the seam. Ensure there is no rust through and repair is needed and apply a rust seal of some sort to the seam area. Seems that is where much rust through occurs with our trucks.

Mike I will make sure to do that when I get to cleaning the engine bay. Do you have any rust seal recommendations?

Now that the engine is clean I'm going to open the top end and install the new cam and lifters. Since y'all have already seen me install the new valve covers and manifold I'll go ahead and post some of the process of me removing the time cover and the old cam.

I went ahead and double checked that it was at TDC.
I removed the pushrods and lifters, I had to use a magnet to get the old lifters out

You are doing great on your truck. I like using KBS products which is very close to POR15. You will need to sand or use a wire wheel to clean up the rust area, use a metal prep product (cleaner) to clean the metal, then rust blaster (treats the rust and metal), and then the rust seal to prevent future rusting.

Thanks for that info Mike I’ll definitely keep that in mind when I get to the engine bay once I button the top end of this engine up.
I ordered this mild cam from summit it’s the biggest one you can get without having to replace extensive top end parts in the heads. Just wanted to wake the engine up a little bit nothing too crazy

Out with the old

In with the new

New gears were included with the timing chain kit so they were installed also

With the camshaft in I replaced the lifters and installed the pushrods. I went ahead and re-installed the new intake manifold. Then I went ahead and set the valve lash which wasn’t hard but probably the most tedious thing I had to do so far with the engine. For the last step I used a oil pump priming tool to make sure
I was getting oil into all of  the lifters and out of the push rods which helps prime oil in the engine.

Don't use blue RTV

I used it for the ports that have coolant, should I have used something different?

I bought the timing cover that matches with the valve cover set. Ive read reviews that the cover may be difficult to put on and they were correct. If I weren’t lazy, dropping the whole oil pan would have made it a lot easier. Instead I only dropped the front half of the pan.The bottom of the cover is a little wider which makes it harder to get over the front gasket.

It’s crazy how life can get in the way of you trying to finish a build, I’m back guys… For some reason I thought it would be better to paint it with everything already done. I can see now why you guys were baffled lol.
