Starter bypass switch
« on: May 27, 2021, 07:35:02 PM »
Hello everyone, I own a 76 c15 heavy half. The owner before me installed a 3 speed floor shift conversion. The issue I’m having is he wired a switch directly to the starter. So in order to start the truck I have to turn the key on and then push this switch. And the actual ignition cylinder can just pull out. How do I go about resolving this? I’m terrible at trying to figure out wiring. I just want to replace what is needed so I can use the key to actually start the truck and shut it off and not be able to pull out my ignition cylinder.

The obvious steps is to determine why the modification was done in the first place and undo the botchery.  Install a new ignition switch and replace the key tumbler.  I have never worked on the earlier columns to know how the lock cylinder is held in place.

It could have been as simple as the clutch safety switch went bad or got disconnected and the "repair" was the hack?

Attach some pics. It should be as simple as following the wires from the switch and disconnecting them. Then repair the OEM wires the the switch wires were attached too. If it is one wire cut and two switch wires attached to each side solder and use heat shrink tubing to cover the solder. If we had pictures, it would be easier to advise.
