Title: Drivers Side Heat Door Actuator
Post by: Mike81K10 on March 25, 2023, 02:50:54 PM
Not my K10 or square body comment but felt like saying making it. Had to install a new Drivers Side Heat Door Actuator in a 2010 Impala and it really makes me appreciate changing parts on my 81 K10. The Drivers Side Heat Door Actuator is a plastic part made in China (both the OEM I took out and the GM Genuine Part I bought) and it is located on the drivers side in a very difficult spot. There are also some on the passenger side that are much easier to get to. Had I let the dealership do the work it would have been $700 to get the $31.10 part replaced.

Yep!  The more I work on my Corvette (2000), the more I appreciate the room and simplicity of the squares.

EVERYTHING is junk these days. People buy a new car with a built in iPad so they get excited but it's cheap junk destined to die. Once they are out of warranty they freak at the cost of repairs. Add in that manufacturers sell amenities for things you bought a la carte and charge subscriptions service to enable the features. Want your heated seats to work? Gotta pay. Want your remote starter to work? Gotta pay.

6 hours labor + parts: $1080 labor $90 parts + tax sounds like they were giving you a deal  :P

Maybe a good deal for some. However, for me I could not see paying and had to do it myself. Crazy how much dealership make these days. Make one think to get into doing repairs on the side. Would be nice to see parts being made in the U.S.A. instead of China! Make me mad to get made in China parts for my 81 K10.

They aren't making as much as you think. Just to pay technicians a respectable wage has been an uphill battle and dried up the talent pool. Think of the millions of dollars that go into brick and mortar buildings, the operating costs, maintenance, inventory, overhead, insurance, etc. Then you have brands like Tesla trying to cut direct to consumer circumventing all of these expenses, taxes and jobs while millions of people are supporting this. We are cutting our own throats in every industry by outsourcing everything. FWIW DIY should never be compared to the cost of hiring a professional except for the satisfaction of saying "hey I saved some money doing it myself". The thought that dealers and business are sitting on their yachts showering themselves in your hard earned money is false. The reality of it is, they are simply aiming to hit their profit margins, pay their employees and keep their businesses afloat in this sad economy.
