350 build
« on: October 11, 2012, 11:14:20 PM »
Ok so I have plans to build a motor, I've never built one, but i have done a little research.
My plans are hopefully 350hp-400ft-ib
- summit racing heads(SUM-162109)
The 62cc heads also feature:

* 170cc intake ports
* 69cc exhaust ports
* Hardened valve seats
* Fully assembled
* 1.25 in. diameter valve springs (0.480 in. maximum lift)
* 5/16 in. guideplates
* 3/8 in. ARP screw-in studs
* Stainless steel 2.02 in. back cut intake valves
* 1.60 in. exhaust valves
* 7 degree valve locks
* chromoly retainers
* Phosphorus bronze valve guides

-comp cams 268 cam
218@50int and exh, 454 lift int and exh.

-Edelbrock 3701 performer w/egr

-quadrajet

- -8.3435 cc pistons (stock bottom) 4.00 bore 3.48 stroke

- Ive heard i can do 1.6.1 steel rollers with stock valve covers? if not, i will get spacers and full rollers, if so cool.

This is all a plan i want to fulfill, but i need to know if this will all work together. Planning on 3.43 or 3.73 rear gears, with no stall. This is my dd and is under crapifornia smog laws hence the summit "carb" heads and mild "carb" approved cam and quadrajet. What kind of power do you think this combo will make? I'm really shooting for the above power range. If you don't think it will make that much, what can i do to make it? Slightly bigger cam maybe? Thanks for your time, Brent.

Little better cam idea-Lunati PN 06109LK (216/228 at .50) 272/284 advertised. 454/480 with 1.5:1 112 degrees with 5 degrees advance ground into intake lobe.
This cam made 431hp and 470 ft in a smog legal 383 with holley 600, weiand intake, holley systemax 300-552-1 20 degree legal heads and .015 lunati flat top pistons with a final compression of 10.6:1.
How much of a difference would this be in a 350vs383?

I would think about lower the compression since its a DD the gas is going to get expensive.

If you are going to build a 350 why not get a vortec block and run a roller cam and vortec heads?

I would love to do that, but you cant get away with it in california. They would fail me on the visual. There is a way to hook up the egr with vortec heads, but no way to carry over all of the stock smog crap currently on my motor now, which california requires, so im just gonna work with all the legal parts lol.

the smaller the cc chamber on the heads the more compression just letting you no go with a 51 cc chamber.

Im looking for a 9.5:1 so a 62cc is perfect. Ive read any higher throws off emissions and gas mileage. If I werent in cali i woukd run flat tops, vortecs re worked and a 500 lift cam, but cali is relentless on emissions, so I need to do what I have to to stay legal until I move outta here for good. Any engine builders wanna chime in to give me an estimate on my combo.

I figure about $2000 and ill be good. Just heads, intake, cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers. Maybe a little more money oh and some flowtech headers. 8)

If I had to do my build again id pick a cam that has way more low end tq. With these long heavy trucks the cam needs more bottom end then mid and top range tq. Ask yourself if you want to rev it up high to go fast?

Thats why i want 400 or more ft-ibs i dont really care about the horsepower as long as my torque is up there. With my current setup my truck never sees 4000 rpm, 2.76 axle with 31" tires
