different 700R4 models
« on: September 16, 2007, 02:36:48 PM »
So I've decided to put a 700R4 in a 74 Stepside. There's no trans in it right now. The engine given to me with the truck is a 305. I've read the posts here regarding the 700R4 swap, as well as a bunch of other info on the same thing. Thanks to all those that posted info on this.

I just read an ebay ad and a guy asked if the 700R4 for sale had the mechanism to shift or if it was electronic or vacuum. I don't remember which he asked, but the seller repsonded and said it did NOT have the mechanism to shift (like a conventional trans,,,ie 350/400). Is this a 4L60E trans? It seems some folks use 700R4 and 4L60E synonymously, and I don't want to buy the wrong trans. Externally do they look the same? And I just need to look for the lever that the shift rod attaches to? And is the shift mech. on the driver's side of a 700R4 or the pass. side?
Thanks for the tremendous info you guys have made avialable.

The 700R4 is the same as the 4L60 not the 4L60E however. The 4L60E will have a removable bell housing and a large round electrical connection
