K10 700R4 Transmission Questions Please Help
« on: September 24, 2011, 07:46:43 PM »
I'm doing a big project on my truck and I am wanting to fix a couple of things on the transmission that the person who swapped it in didn't do.

Here are the pictures of the connectors I found:

Pretty sure this goes to the lock out switch:

What I need to know for that is A) where do I find the whole system to hookup to it? and B) how do I remove that so I can replace it (it's been there for years and I don't want to have to replace it when I get the cab back on and have it be a huge pain in the butt!)

Next...

That's on the transfer case. What is it?

Next:

This is the kickdown cable.... it's always leaked. I replaced the little gasket int here and it leaked still. I bought a new one and am going to be putting it on tomorrow hopefully. Is it ok to run some sealant around it so it stops leaking??

Last:
I know this isn't on the trans, but what the heck is it and why is it needed?

Thanks!

I do not know about the rest, but the transfer case plug is most likely for the light for 4x4 when you engage it that is in the instrument cluster.

The square 4 pin plug is for the lockup torque converter. The harness should come out of the firewall through a 2 1/2" or so round hole just out of sight in your last picture. You can see it in my picture between the wires for the heater/fan & the transmission dipstick.

You will need to remove the trans. pan to access the rest of the lockup harness.
As bake noted...The switch on the transfer case is for the light.
For your TV cable, you shouldn't need any sealant, but a bit around the hole wouldn't be a problem.
The "thing" in your last picture is the distribution block. The 12v power from/to various places meet there (big Red wires with terminal rings) so yes, unless your going to change the normal routing/design of the electrical system...you need it & the wires that go there.
Now my turn to ask a question...What is the Black dryer vent looking hose for?
Good Luck with your project. Lorne

You don't have a "kick down cable", you have a TV cable on a 700R4....
Read up on it, because if it's not adjusted correctly, you can cook your tranny in a single drive....

No it's actually the hose that goes from the air cleaner to the core support... it's sitting on the ground underneath the transmission at the moment lol.

I was looking to see what is available for the lockup and I came across this:

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Painless-Wiring-700R4-GM-transmission-torque-converter-lock-up-kit/_/N-25po?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=torque+converter&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=196671_0_0_

So what exactly is it? The connector and the funky looking piece to the right I've seen on the truck... but does this get rid of the computer and run it off a switch?

I want to keep the computer but I need to figure out how to wire everything up. Anyone have a wiring diagram or pictures of how yours is?

700r4 do not run off a computer that would be the 4l60e ( starting in the 90s ) you need to hook up the lock up or you risk burning up the trans in a hurry not as quick as leave the thottle valve cable but with in a few months originally it used a vacuum switch in conjunction with the brake pedal to control it. you could bypass that and put in a toggle switch to activate it. the transfer case plug is not need for function only reference not that someone could not tell that a truck would be in 4lo just by taking off

Well then what is the computer that sits behind the glove compartment in the 1983 c10 cab I have? It connects to that 4 pin plug in the transmission which I understand is the lock up.

What year truck are you working on?  If it is a 73-87(91) there isn't a computer control for the Transmission, it is just a lockup switch.  Was the trans original to the truck?  We need more information.

The frame is a 1986.... I'm not sure what year the engine or the transmission are. Is there some sort of data plate that I could find on them that would help me figure that out?

I at least know it's somewhere from 73-87...

What would that computer behind the dash do? I can take a picture tomorrow and post up if need be, but it was in my 1983 cab. I know this is a lot of years... but basically I am swapping the body from a 1983 since mine was badly rusted beyond repair. I have the cab off and I am planning on putting it on in 2 weeks, but I want to get the transmission stuff straight before I do since it's easily accessible right now.

The "computer" behind the Dash of an 83 would be the ESC or a piece of junk.  It controls spark, that is all.

Your computer does in fact control lock up.

If it only controls spark then why was the harness for the trans hooked up to it?

Either way... Does anyone know the correct way to hook it up especially since it's a diesel?

Sorry, that is correct, it does have lockup control.  My apologies.

Is the current motor gas or diesel?
