88 suburban square body tilt front end
« on: April 06, 2012, 03:10:21 PM »
Alright I am starting my new adventure of building a tilt front end. I purchase a fiberglass hood and fenders from www.up22.com. This way was much cheaper to go then buying the full tilt kit from usbody and I can make sure it's all line up as a I go.
Here is the fenders and hood.

The hood is very nice. It is bolt on. The fenders are not as impressive and there is nothing bolt on about them. I'd actually be pissed if I recieved these and I planned to bolt these on the conventional way, but since this is going to be a full tilt front end I will glass them to the hood.
First I put my radiator core up to line up the hood.

Next I spent quite a bit of time trying to get the gap right on the back of the hood. It was really uneven.

I bolted to the hood hinge so it I could line it up with radiator core and took a cut off wheel to even up the gap at the back.
After it was evened up.

After I got the hood is were I liked I cut the radiator core of the headlight mounts.
This is going to be fixed into place.

I've spent some time lining the rest of it up.

This is where I'm going to put the hinge. It is right behind the bumper.

This one is to show you why I am not impressed with the fenders.

That's what I got done today. I should of gotten further, but I had a rough night.
More to come.

That is a daring undertaking to say the least.  Why did you decide to go with a tilt front end ?

Agreed! Very daring. I swore I would never use Unlimited Products ever again. The fitment is atrocious and I had a hood that literally was a 1/2 shorter on one side. How do you fix those body gaps? lol Anyway, for what you are trying to accomplish you should be able to pull it off since you can essentially make your own body lines. Good luck with your build.

The body lines are pitiful. The only gap I will have is the cab to the hood and I took a cut off wheel to even that out.

What are your plans on stabilization of the fenders where they meet the doors/cowl area, so they don't vibrate going down the road ?

Well my friend I thought I would glass the end caps and put a dowel pin in one end to keep it aligned while a linear actuator squished it together. I don't think I'll get to work on it again until Monday though. I'd like to get the engine back in, but I'll hold my breathe.
