Just curious as to what every ones occupation is? Maybe even post a picture of what you do?
I started life out as a mechanic lol, a few years back i received a phone call from the body shop at a chevy dealership i had previously worked for. I took the opportunity to get my foot in the door of the body shop world, i started out doing all the mechanical and now im a full blown collision tech doing frame repairs, panel replacements, and even paint work. Most days its not work, its a hobby but other days its an 8-5 grind lol here are some pics of what i did yesterday and today.

I work at a Chevy Dealer too. I started in the Express Lube, couple months later I moved into the Service dept doing Quality Control, did that for 3 1/2 years, now I'm back in the Express Lube per management reorganization, been doing that since January. I'm hoping to move over to the parts dept as a parts delivery driver. I'm trying to get hired with a police or sheriff department in the area. So I'll be at the dealer until a I can get into law enforcement. I got hired at the dealer just before I graduated high school, been there 4 years 3 months now.
-
sweet, sounds like a pretty decent size dealership. we just have a service manager and parts guy in the mechanic shop but we are aksi a pretty small town
-
We have a sales department, service department and parts department. Our sales department has a commercial side, parts also does wholesale sales to shops all over the valley, service has 17 techs, they also do medium duty service and we have the Express lube. We also have an on site Deli.

I am a technical service representative for The Sherwin-Williams Co. I work for the Product Finishes Division which is expanding rapidly. Anything new that has a finish/paint/powder coat on it is my customer base. From trailers, fleet truck refinish, John Deere, Caterpillar, down to someone coating pole barn screws. I tell my kids my job it to watch paint dry...
-
I am Technician at a garage and we repair school buses. Normally it is fairly laid back but in the summer when school is out we have to do brake inspections and D.O.T. inspections and it gets super busy.

I'm a machine operator at a Packaging Corporation of America sheet plant. were a national company i think we have around 90 facilities around the country. I can run several machine throughout the plant but I specialize on a flatbed die cutter made by Bobst. we make boxes, pads, partitions, and just about anything else made out of corrugated sheets but we dont have a corrugator so we dont make the sheets.
me and my partner run one of these. only ours is manually fed and stacked. i feed the board in the rear and he stacks out front.

-
Absolutely nothing.........cause I'm dad gum good at it. I make myself practice a lot. Wife asked me this morning what I was going to do today. I said nothing. She said you did that yesterday. I said I know but I didn't finish. Actually retired 6 years from beau coup years in the Public Entity insurance business nationwide.

I am a journeyman glazier at the local glass shop. Been there 7 years, started just out of high school. We do everything related to glass. Auto glass, commercial and residential, along with little service work. While I have experience in all facets of the job, my expertise is in the Auto glass and service side of things.
-
looks like we have some pretty interesting jobs on here.

No jokes--please--I'm an attorney. Have my own practice. Mostly represent medical device companies, but my practice is becoming more varied.

Hey no fun will be made of you....we definitely all need an attorney every now and then and what better lawyer than a fellow Chevy Man :)
-
There is nothing wrong with attorneys. When you need an attorney, you need an attorney. An attorney's job is to fight for their client. And a good attorney wins.
I'm a high school shop teacher. Mechanics, Metal, and Drafting.
-
Harcorshe, how long have you been an attorney? Do you enjoy it?
-
I work in a factory making suspension parts For different automobiles

I currently work landscaping, mainly lawn mowing, but I have done irrigation, patio/walkway construction, and pruning. All these jobs are considered seperate in the company, but as work slows in one area we can move about helping the other crews. Been doing this for the past 5 years

I am self employed mechanic. Was a body man by trade, but got burnt out on that. I still do some body / paint work from time to time, but not into doing it day in, and day out. I work on everything from Harleys, Kias to Peterbilts. Have built chip trailers, turned tractors into dump trucks, and log trucks. Shortened, and stretched trucks. You name it I have at least atempted to repair it!

morrow07, Same is true for your car, if you cant get to work you have to spend some $ on your vehicle.
As far as if I need my heat on, I work on my furnace myself most
times.

I am a production planner for a aerospace company in Phoenix AZ. Currently working on a new drone for the military and a new helicopter to replace our aging fleet. Being a veteran I am proud to make products to help them protect us.

I'm an environmental technician
I take soil and water samples
And design, install and maintain remediation systems that decontaminate soil and water , usually at gas stations that had large leaks from their underground storage tanks
These systems pump water from wells in the contaminated area , remove the petroleum from the water and discharge the water back into the ground or into the municipal sewer
And these systems also inject compressed air into the ground in other deeper wells to help evaporate the gasoline
And also have vacuum wells to capture the vapor caused by the compressed air and draw the vapor to a giant catalytic converter to cook it off
Lots of wiring , plumbing , air compressors , water pumps , filters , computers to run it all etc
Most of the time I'm the guy running the excavator to bury the pipes and also the mechanic handyman that keeps the systems running

If you see these in a gas station parking lot
They had leaky tanks (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160719/bca61aad6c31d846bc6d742f1b1915d3.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160719/01c769eaa5f313ecd0f70ab25555e67a.jpg)
If there's a cargo trailer or a shipping container with lots of hoses and buzzing and hissing sounds , it's active remediation

I know in our town theres now 3 gas stations two are bp the other is royal farms. There used to be two more that were owned by non American Indians. They passed the business through family for a few years then they up and left. No one ran The stations since and the tanks were pulled and one had to have the cargo trailer parked for a good bit of time. I always wondered who paid for that since the owners are no longer around.
One used to live behind my moms, nice people but they left a few years ago and for some reason they still haven't sold that house either
-
I work in t IT as a System Administrator.

I work in a fabrication shop, building industrial concrete cutting equipment. Wolverine/Concut in Kent, Washington. When you see the circular rings in the concrete at a stop light (the magnetic ring that triggers the light), I'm the only guy in the country that assembles the tool to cut those circles.
I need a raise....

Most states require the station owner to have insurance for environmental issues
ING is the company that has most of that market
And most states offer a plan that owners can buy into based on how much fuel they sell
I do a lot of work for the state , either with stations participating in the state plan or at stations that are abandoned
If their home is abandoned too they might have disappeared to avoid prosecution for not maintaining the tanks and not having ins and not paying the IRS etc

Well let's just say I'm a government employed mechanic finishing up 13 yrs now and hopefully less than 6 til retirement!
-
Store Manager for an independent franchise of Giant Eagle (grocery store in the Pittsburgh/Cleveland area). Started as a cashier in high school, came back on breaks from college and while substitute teaching. Couldn't find a (decent) teaching job, so when this position opened up, I couldn't turn it down. Just passed 17 years in all.
-
I'm retired civil service with over 40 years in Alaska . The early part of my career was spent examining Native land claims in bush Alaska. Met wonderful people and got paid to do it! lol
-
Definitely some unusual jobs on here....I'm an assistant store manager for O'Reilly Auto Parts. Hope to be in my own store in the next 18 months. Good company to work for if you dont mind low pay, mediocre insurance, but a very fair offering for retirement savings.
-
cant say autozone is any better with pay. i was a just a parts guy and i was getting paid more than a few managers at our store. learned to keep my mouth shut after i told one cause he did my taxes, he got pissed and left a month or two later lol. i kind of would of liked to be stuck in the parts store but they changed my hours from man-fri 7-4 to when they wanted to screw up my plans

Okay...I am not much of a sharer on Social Media, but with all of you guys sharing, I'll bite...
I am a Project Engineer with Kenworth Truck Company. Can't believe I have been with them for 18 years now, directly out of college.
I have spent most of my career in New Product Development and in the Outer Body group, so I have been responsible for Hoods and Headlamps as well as several projects in the Cab Structures group. I have had the privilege of developing the Kenworth T660, North America's first HID headlamp in a Class-8 truck, T700, T680 Aero Advantage, 76" Mid-roof Sleeper and 40" Sleeper.

I'm a cop. Starting my 7th year pretty soon. It's truly a crazy job.
Before that, for 12 years I trained people how to operate industrial water treatment equipment. This would be equipment used to purify water for pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor rinse water, steam for power generation etc. I really miss my old job, just not all the travel. Hotels and airports get old, quick.

I went on a ride-a-long with friend of mine on this past Saturday night, he's a patrol Sergeant for the neighboring counties Sheriff's department to mine, had a total blast. It was a slow night but we still had fun. I need to go out again. I want to go on a ride-a-long with his wife too, she's my mom's best friend. I've known her since I was a little kid. She's on patrol a couple towns over. The two of them are basically extended family.

I'm a machinist. I work for a small company located in a tiny town surrounded by farm land. So, in the summer, we have a LOT of farmers bringing broken pieces to us to fix. During the winter, we have fewer of those jobs.
Primarily we sell sprockets and agricultural chain. If you've seen a trailer with a "live bottom," the parts that make the bottom live are what we do.
It isn't exciting, but its the only job I've ever had that I didn't hate getting up in the morning for.

Hey all, some really interesting careers and occupations here!
As for me, I work at Parker Hannifin here in Cleveland OH. Been at Parker 12 years and Eaton 7 years before that. Operations primarily. Moved all over the country in various plants and divisions. This was our 15th move when we came up to OH.
Almost all of the products we make are for motion and control systems (hydraulics, hoses, electromechanical, pneumatic etc).
Love what I do even through it's high travel and high demand. I get to work with a lot of great folks all across the company.
As a hobby, I build Harleys and wrench on whatever I can find. Nice to focus on a mechanical issue or three on a weekend.

I like it even though grease traps smell horrible; pay is decent, benefits are awesome, gaurenteed 40 hours/week, company truck, phone, tools, paid holidays, *#* only, they pay for clothing and boots, and my boss is awesome. Currently working towards a CDL license and learning how to operate pump trucks and vactor trucks since they pay for that too. Not a job I ever thought I'd want or do, but it's actually a great job if you can stomach the smell of the grease traps (worse than sewage).

getting in on this late. Sorry guys had a lot going on this past year. I owned 3 houses and have finally narrowed it down to just two (one paid for - parents old house, and one not) at the end of August. Of course I lost my storage building/shop when I sold it but I got a nice raise. This has consumed about 9 months of my time... Plus my day job in IT.
I work in IT doing Administrative work and we have been getting a bunch of work lately.
Hope to be on here much more now.

Question :
I know paccar and all the manufacturers try to get the aerodynamics as slippery as possible
But since all the newer trucks are plastic and get heavily damaged by even hitting a deer , all the independents and owner operators Install bull bars ,
Has anyone done any testing to see how much adding a bull bar ruins the aerodynamics ?
I was a owner op for several years
Never owned any KWs
Wanted em, just couldn't afford em
I owned a couple of international COEs with the set back steer axle and a couple of the big Ford LTL -9000s , mostly because although the fords had the same engine Trans and axles as all the other trucks , cat, Cummins , Eaton fuller ,
The big fords had no resale value and used , they were less than half price of a Pete or KW with the same running gear
Hated the freightshakers BTW, all plastic inside and out , very cheaply made .

I installed floor covering for almost 18 years. Anything from carpet to hardwood and tile. Back and knees were going bad so I thought I would get my CDLs . Not a good idea. After two months my leg was just about completely limp due to a pinched nerve. So now I drive a school bus for the county board of DD. Passengers range from 6 yr old to 74-year-old. Doesnt pay much but it keeps the lights on. These guys are a thrill to haul though. If it wasnt for them I would have moved on to something else by now.

Basically a consultant in the payment industry.
In other words, I design and deploy credit card payment systems for major corporations. Mainly in the business to business space. I tend to travel a good bit, 35 trips last year, so I've not been able to work much at all on my 87 Suburban.

Looks like I'm one of the rare desk jockeys around here. Manager for a govt natural resources agency. Years ago I used to go outside, manage plants and animals, analyze data, and write actual reports. Now I talk on the phone, answer e-mails, go to meetings, and deal with drama.

I am a History teacher. I teach 10th, 11th, and 12th Graders, in subjects that include World History, US History, and Government. When it comes to Economics, which I rarely have students taking, I refer to the book. I've been doing this for 13 years, and often wonder why I didn't start earlier. It's an extremely rewarding job.
I think the area in which I'm most different than others here is the fact that I lack any resemblance to a mechanic. Thank God my oldest boy got the mechanical genes from my father! He's been helping me rebuild my '87 for about two years now, on and off. I'm grateful for being able to read all your posts.

Hi Cody - fellow mechanically declined person, here. Anything beyond basic maintenance is a learning experience for me, too. Glad the folks here are so willing to share their experience.

That's a great career, my post is way back on #51, history professor was my other choice. But instead I went with my college major, natural resource law enforcement,,which ain't too shabby. I think we'd all be fine mechanics if we had the three necessities. Shop, tools, time.

Ain't that the truth!

There are a lot of mechanics that wish they would have chose a different field. After 50 everything hurts.

I've been working in IT since I was around 15, and have stuck with it since (I'll be 26 soon). I have my own business and have done contract work related to networking and hardware management, as well as software development. Occasionally freelance as a web developer.
Gotten tired of it so I'm back in school pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering for my real passion first realized at a very early age of tinkering and building on cars.
Also plan to start building furniture to sell and deliver around the local area once I actually get a truck.
Foolishly gave up a military career (grew up in a military family my whole life), but the option is still there for now.

Went to Iraq twice, did a few different IT function jobs until I came to Colorado and went into Cyber. Now I work as a contractor for the Missle Defense Agency. Looks like I'll be here for a bit.

Run a RV Resort, www.BacliffRV.com , where I use my squarebody to shove RV's around.
Make pre-cast concrete protective collars, Sewer-SaversŪ, where my square picks up bulk concrete and delivers the finished product to local Public Works customers, www.Sewer-Saver.net. Even had my square star in a product video!

Owned two spring shops until I retired. Lifted trucks in the mid 70's when it wasn't cool yet. Lowered trucks in the 80's when it was cool. Repaired or built up springs on every conceivable motorized vehicle until early 90's and gradually became general repair shops to date.
