The US military uses the latest gen AMG Optimizer 6.5L in the HMMVW.  The new JLTV uses a Duramax.

i just priced a few new trucks at the chevy website just out of curiosity:

a base Colorado(there is actually one trim level BELOW W/T) longbed with 4 cylinder and nothing else is $20,995 no incentives offered at this time and you can't get an automatic with this trim level.  If you want an automatic, add about $3,500 because they make you buy a whole lot of unrelated stuff.

a stripper "W/T" 1/2 ton standard cab longbed silverado with 4.3 and NOTHING ELSE is $25,377 after all incentives.

a W/T 2500 HD standard cab longbed with the gas 6.0 engine and nothing else is $30,373.  If you want the duramax, add $8,000.  NOt worth it in my opinion unless you do a lot of driving.

a W/T 3500 HD standard cab longbed with 6.0 engine, dual real wheels, 5th wheel prep package, and hitch package is $33,246 after all incentives.  Again, add $8,000 if you want the duramax.

A 10 year old Freightliner Columbia or International ProStar can be had for the same money. It's not for everybody but it is the route I am taking when I get my monster truck done. I could haul my monster with a dually but why when I would be maxed out with the 1-ton and have gobs of unused capacity with an OTR rig.

Well this must have been a JLTV because it had all of military markings, stickers and labels under the hood. The engine label on the air filter box said "2006 AM General 6.6L Diesel"

right now i looking for an 06-07 crewcab duramax. theyre going for 16k-30k depending on miles. around 100k youre looking at 30k. i wont have a problem paying for one of those. the 06-07 vin code "d" are pre emissions crap for the most part. if you go to the first duramaxs 01-04 LB7 have injector problems which can cost 3k+ to fix cause theyre under the valve covers and you have to take everything off to get to them 04-06 lly have small problems like headgasket for the higher millage.

If the new trucks were under 30k, like they should be, i'd buy one today. I need the extended cab with the short bench seat and 4x4 of course.  Thats it.

After the vibe is repaired by vile, and then painted, i may give her a nap between dec-feb., the salty months.

Then i'll look at those certified...

That's the route we went.

To replace our '01 Tahoe, we had been Suburban shopping for over a year. Was looking for a '08-'12 model, but more importantly wanted low miles.  Around here, it seems like people buy Suburbans and hold onto them.

This last summer, I spotted a '15 GMC Yukon XL on the lot at a GM dealer the next town over and stopped to look... Ended up buying it.  It had very low miles, was very clean and had just about every bell and whistle. While it was more (in most every way) than what we were originally shopping for, it cost significantly less than a new Suburban or Yukon XL with fewer options.  While I absolutely hate car shopping, this purchase went well.
