Title: 3/4 ton axles on a k5 blazer?
Post by: chevyh20 on February 24, 2009, 11:36:08 PM
hello folks.
i have an 89 blazer that i use to plow with. the front end is a little taxed and worn out carrying a fisher speedcast plow. now it is making a kathunk  noise in the front and the rear drums are badly rusted. so i have a chance to pick up a 3/4 ton set for 200.00 . has anyone done a switch like this? will they bolt in place of the old 1/2 ton axles. thanks for the input.

Bolt right in, you will need to replace the rear u joint with a cross over one.

And don't forget you'll need 8 lug rims too.

thanks for the input on this . ok i'm still considering the 3/4 ton upgrade option. Do you guys think it is worth while to go to 3/4 ton on a blazer that is used fairly hard. and any suggestion on axle type for durability and simplicity would be appreciated as i am not well schooled on this. ??? thanks again. i need to do something soon my front end is not sounding good. thanks again ,
Jeffrey

Only options for 3/4 ton front axles are a Dana 44 or a 10 bolt. Rears are a full floating or a semi floating 14 bolt.

 I say go for it.
I had a 79 Jimmy that had the 3/4 ton axle conversion done to it before I bought it. 10 bolt front/14 bolt full floater rear with 4.11 gears and a 350/350/203(part time kit) combo. Truck had a 4" Rancho lift with 33"BFG's and a 7.5 Fisher Minute Mount plow on it. That truck was bullit proof.
Like others said at the least you will need 8 lug rims and a conversion u joint for the rear shaft.
You may also need an adjustable proportioning valve for the rear. Mine never had one but the rear brakes were prone to locking up under hard braking.
What kind of shape are the 3/4 ton axles in?. I spent over $600 on brake parts alone on mine when it came time for a brake job (replaced everything).
Just make sure you budget enough money for the swap.

Just cut and paste the parts onto your blazer.  it's a lot faster  :D

A 94 won't have a solid front axle, it is IFS.

Do you still plan on buying those axles from the 94?. If not would you mind letting me know? I've been looking for a 14 bolt/6 lug for this 94 Blazer I picked up. It will bolt right into this one, I just don't trust the 10 bolt in it.
                                                    Thanks. Fitz

Thanks for the email, I will check them out. How bad are your axles? The rear brake drums on your truck are about $70 on the Autozone website. Have you checked into the front end noise, It could be just U joints which is a cheap repair. If you have  more serious internal problems with it you may just want to replace it.
What do you have for gears. I have a 91 Suburban 1/2 ton  with 3.42's in it I'll be junking in the springtime. If you want the front axle you can have it for free. I'll cut it out before it goes.
