« on: June 23, 2007, 10:30:34 AM »
Has any body used the BROTHERS wiring harness from brothers.com?
Why is that one $300 and the PAINLESS system is $600???

It appears that Brothers uses American Auto Wire not Painless (or at least they are using their pictures and modified desciption)

For Stock replacement, I recommend Painless, I would like to start carrying their products, but being limited to one series is limiting me, but I am expanding to other series.

I can't see paying 600 to Painless if I can get the same harness from Brothers for half the cost.  Is there something wrong with American Auto Wire?  I always thought wire is wire as long as the wire insulation and the wire gauge is the same, who cares who makes it.

http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodinfo.asp?number=UWH0018

It "looks" like the same harness that Painless sells.  I know that Painless is the cats meow but I have to start saving money.  Much more to buy and funds are starting to dry up.

This is going to be a daily driver for my son - so I just need something that is functional and safe.  The existing harness is from a V6 that was in there is 20+ years old.  It has many nicks, has been cut up and repaired and worse yet, brittle insulation - so I plan on scrapping the old harness.

Any thought?

You asked what I recommended which is Painless, not what is the cheapest.  Painless sells a wiring kit that bolts into the factory place short of a few connectors and is the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

American Auto Wire doesn't sell a "73-87 kit", and the one Brothers are listing is appears to be AAW's universal street rod kit (the picture IS AAW's kit), which won't bolt into your existing truck.  American Auto Wire sells separate pieces: light harness, engine harness, dash, etc.  It totals around $800 and comes with all the connectors and you need all of them to replace what is in your truck.

If you want a cheaper alternative, EZwiring has a kit for $185.00, but it is a universal kit just like the one Brothers advertises for.  I would call Brothers and ask them what exactly are you buying.  BTW, you can get the AAW 18 circuit harness for cheaper than what Brothers advertises for...

Thanks Chris - Sorry if I sounded rude (hard to show emotion when typing), that was not my intention.

I see your point.  May have to just bite the bullet and buy painless.  Thanks for your help and expertise - that's why I ask.   ;D

Jeff,
I didn't take it that way at all.  I just wanted to explain what I meant and why I recommended them.  I only sell what I would use and would only recommend what I have had good luck with.

I didn't answer this, but there is nothing wrong with AAW.  If you have a truck that needs the xxx harness, they have it and you can plug it into your bulkhead and be done.  I have considered adding their pieces, but I don't know how profitable they are.  I have a friend that is probably going to be rewiring his truck.  I may look into what they have and if I like it, you may see it here for sale.

If you are under a budget why not buy a cheap parts truck and rob the harness from it?

I ran a 73-87 Painless kit in my truck...loved everything about it.  I would never use a JY harness, as they will more than likely be hacked like yours already is (I assume).  The benefit of the Painless kit is you can route the wires wherever you want...like I did.  my wiring is completely hidden, and if I must say, looks excellent compared to how a stock truck is wired.  On top of that, it used the newer blade style fuses (instead of the bulbs), and is set up to let you run whatever you wish on your truck...A/C, cab lights, elec fans, elec fuel pump, etc, etc...

Just my opinion.

Jeff, if this is indeed the "73-87" kit (and not a generic one), then it's a heck of a deal.  :)
