Thanks all!

I put the vent under the hood to get the level above that of the filter tube. I'll put in the carbon canister, good suggestion to relocate it.

Those stinking jam switches do not adjust. I tried to adjust in the bench with a Vise and a block of wood. Didn't budge. I then used a rubber mallets hit fairly hard and just dug a quarter inch hole into the wood and made the joint a bit wobbly. Maybe I need a different brand, have to look where I bought these. Passenger side threads are stripped (it wasn't my wrench, I swear!), another issue. They take 11mm wrench IIRC.

Truck is at the paint shop. Hood is on. Bed was scheduled to get paint yesterday.

Digging through box of parts for windows. I tried to buy in batches according to area I was working on, but my system broke down.

Thanks, BD for the leads!

The truck came home today with the paint done! Now it's up to me to finish. I'm very excited, it's got lots of giddyup and will be fun to drive.

Thanks, BD!

Today's topic is parasitic currents. When the truck was at the painter, he said the battery kept running down. And this was only a week or so.

I tracked things down, couldn't find anything. I talked to the maker of the rfid, secure dawg, who sent me a link to a detailed manual. I was able to customize my settings. Now when you hit the start, it waits three seconds before hitting the solenoid to give the fuel pump some time to get up to pressure, yeah!  They gave some advice on parasitics. Nothing from starter or alternator either.

Nothing I found was out of the ordinary. I used a power cutoff to make a convenient way to hook up the current meter. 28.8 milliamps.  My 115 Ah reserve battery should last five months on that.

So I decided to make measurements over time.  Voltage on the battery.  It's dropping 0.05-0.07 volts per day. I started Saturday morning 12.87V and Tuesday night I am down to 12.57V. Another three days and I will hit the "discharged" level of 12.4V.  Maybe I've been draining it to much in my experiments and have weakened the battery.  Think I need to find my receipt...

Thoughts?

A parasitic draw of 29 ma is negligible.  The battery may have a shorted cell.  If you have the luxury of time and don't have access to specialized diagnostic equipment, you can take a grassroots approach.  Charge the battery to its maximum recovery.  With the engine off, turn the high-beam headlights on for roughly fifteen minutes to remove the surface charge, then let the battery rest for about another fifteen minutes.  Measure and record the battery voltage to establish a reference point.  Disconnect the battery ground cable.  After 5-7 days, remeasure the battery voltage and compare the readings.

Hey BD, I had a similar thought, had recharged the battery, let it sit a day with zero load and had a drop from 12.87v to 12.73v. I don't have headlights hooked up, put on ignition 8 minutes, let it rest and am at 12.69v.  Hope that was long enough. No need to turn electrical on until Saturday, so we'll let it sit a few days.

But I think I already know the answer that the battery has a problem.

Thanks,
Mark

Ok, nearly a week has gone by and it's only dropped to 12.53V with no load. I think the battery is fine. Maybe not perfect, but good enough. There must've been something on that was draining it at the painter.

Thanks,
Mark

Great.  Now reconnect it and see whether it will properly crank the engine.

Cranked right up! So I'm keeping the battery hooked up, need to start it on occasion for my spasticity work. We'll see if that going parasitic load does anything, but I suspect not.

Thanks BD!

Might benefit you to keep it connected to a battery minder while your project is in process.

Ok, this weekend I finished the light wiring except for the trailer connector. Lots of fun, but I'm getting much closer.

1) led lights don't fit the fenders correctly. One front fender was exacerbated by the hole for the mounting was smaller than the other. I ground down the front side lights and had to do big grinding on rear light base.

2) forgot to put the fuel sending unit wire before attaching the bed. I partially stood the tank top attach. Good thing, though, the sending built was very close to the bed. After installing the tank, was able to drop it about 1/4" at the sending unit.

Still need to do on electrical...
- trailer connector. I have a connector in place to make that easy to install
- usb/cigarette lighter in cab
- Dakota digital can bus adapter to sniper EFI.
- Dakota digital gear position sensor
- flashers work but hazards don't and the fuse is okay. Something in the column switch probably.
- windshield wiper motor and washer
- reroute starter harness once I figure out what it should really look like. Lots of pics on the web, but not yet found one that shows how that harness is rooted.

The battery voltage with parasitic running was 12.37v after a week. Not great, but not running down. Now I've put my trickle charger on it.

Thanks, too much. But now I know....

For everybody's reference, here are the quotes I'd gotten. All quotes were for typical work. Actuals are different as they get into it. This is body only, I did frame and mechanical myself.

1) neighborhood of $125,000, turn key outfit. They offer weekly zoom calls with your personal project manager. Ship it out rusty, it comes home finished.

2) $55,000 body parts dipped.

3) $35,000 body parts sand blasted. Last job, going out of business.

4) $7,000 orange peel paint included free of charge

My neighbor owns a body shop (insurance work only). and tried to find me somebody economical, ie $15,000. They're either no longer in the business, have a 1.5 year wait list, or declined due to too much rust.

My next truck will be done by myself even if it doesn't look as nice as this beauty.

Finished the front headlights, installed the wiper motor (it works!), and one horn (2nd horn is defective). Not a lot, but I like finishing things.
