Rebuilt 305 tbi, what oil going forward
« on: December 25, 2019, 01:36:02 PM »
I just had the tbi 305 rebuilt. Alot of the parts were reused. A few pistons are new the cam, lifters, springs, rockers, and rods are all new also. About to change the oil for the first time. What should I use going forward. I live in South Carolina, we experience all seasons. It gets a little cold in the winter, maybe a week or so worth of 20s at night and then it may hit the 100s in the summer a week or two.

Type and brand.  After doing research I have seen 5w-30 and 10-30. Which would be best? Or is there another I should use? Also, brand recommendations would be appreciated.

Do you have roller lifters or flat lifters?

A few pistons are new? Who rebuilt your engine and didn't replace all of the pistons?

10w30 is fine. Run a zinc rich oil or ZDDP additive.

They are flat. It was my dad's friend and I was out of town at the time. I didn't know my dad took it to him. He was trying to do something nice, but I wish they would of done other stuff.

I’ve heard of people using rotella for older  engines because it still has zinc in it

Not sure how true that is

I run Chevron DELO 10-40 in all my vehicles.

Figure it's designed for high compression diesel's then it's plenty good enough for my engines.

I have no scientific data that proves that (calm down VZ ) just my gut.

AND Costco sells it for cheap!

Sorry for the slow reply-----was/am very busy at work.

i used Redline 10W-30 synthetic in my 305 which also had flat lifters.    This brand has the high adequate amount of ZDDP just to be safe.

Now, do you really need to be worried about ZDDP in a stock engine with stock spring pressures?   That's probably a topic for another thread, but the way i looked at it was, the price difference between this synthetic and the oil you can get at the autoparts store or walmart really wasn't too big a difference, so i felt this was cheap insurance.

Sorry, i don't have time right now to find where they list the ZDDP amount, but trust me, it's high enough-----i researched it and i used it in all my flat lifter engines.

Wow!

Mr. Griffin, you have just increased my understanding of OIL by a measure that I can't measure!

Thank you!!!

Good!   Maybe you can help me with my trans disaster......... :) :'(

i think redline is cheap insurance IF you still have flat lifters.   It's unclear to me whether you really need the high ZDDP with a stock cam and stock valve spring pressures, but the price of redline vs. cheaper autoparts store oil is so small.

Anty flat tappet cam needs it. Oils that are designed for roller engines aren't engineered for these applications. You don't need redline, there are plenty of ZDDP rich oils that are affordable.
