Did you see the eclipse?
« on: August 21, 2017, 03:42:00 PM »
I was right off of dead center in the path of totality.

Pretty cool. The 360° sunset. I observed one of the planets in the west sky, I believe it could have been Venus. Street lights came on. The night bugs were sounding off.

I was lucky enough to be in a spot void of clouds......some weren't so lucky.

In 2024 I'll be just a few yards away from the centerline of that one too.

Lucky you, I had cloud cover which robbed me of the darkness part.  Big disappointment here I gotta say

About 94% in SE Kansas and no clouds - It got pretty dark and noticeably cooled off.  Very neat

Roughly 70% in Central California.  Fabricated a grassroots projector with two sheets of card stock and a pinhole.  Kids went wild with excitement!  Engineer, were you able to see the solar corona or any flares around the edges?

Yeah bd. We had the glasses. They were for viewing before and after the eclipse. During the full eclipse you can look at the eclipse with your naked eye. As a matter of fact if you leave the glasses on during the full eclipse you won't see anything.

But yeah, I was able to view the corona and a few flares jutting out from the edges. Supposedly you could see little snake like lights on the ground but I was so taken in by the eclipse that I almost forgot to look for the 360° sunset..........and where I was we only had 2'20" of eclipse. That isn't much time to take it all in.

I've been in a couple of partial eclipse before but this was my first total eclipse. I'm already making plans for 2024. I can stay home for that one.

This was the view through my welding mask. Over hyped for what we got here. I saw a lot of people running out buying welding helmets which I am sure they tried to return the next day  ::)

i was working on the house while the kids and wife were at the inlaws. i ran to the welding shop and grabbed two of our old helmets and brought them to the kids. when i showed their aunt had rigged up like 5 pairs of sunglasses. i gave them the helmets and told them they would work much better. the kids liked it but then my boy was more interested the wearing the helmet and pretending he was a race car driver. it was crazy driving through town and seeing all the people just standing on their front decks or yards and starring up at the sky. most without glasses. we got about what vile saw maybe a little more

I.A. and i are in the same general vicinity, give or take 90 miles:

That said, i didn't see JACK  :(   AND i forgot to bring my welding helmet!  Around 2:39pm the sky DID look a little different.  But was this due to the clouds and impending storm?  Or was it truly due to the eclipse?    i looked up for split second and didn't notice anything different.   So i'm still an "eclispe virgin" as it were, and have no idea what it's like.

i was more happy about the fact that something was finally bringing us together.   After what happened in Charlottesville (which is another separate topic and something we WON'T get into here...........or maybe we SHOULD?), this is what we needed, i feel.

Imagine if the eclipse happened during the exact time of the  Charlottesville protests?   Do you think the outcome would have been the same?

Yes because morons are morons even if they are looking up at the sky.
