Towing a 30' office trailer (no title) thoughts???
« on: January 08, 2018, 06:54:24 PM »
Pictured is an old office trailer I purchased locally and have been using it for storage.  I did not get a title.  It has since been damaged by a fallen tree (luckily not on the roof)  It is a single axle mobile home type 14.5" tires that I would have to replaced.  I don't think it would be to hard on my 2001 2500HD with a weight distributing hitch and bars but legally how can I tow it.  I would think as long as I get lights to the back, wheel bearings gone through I should be good to go?? Not planning on going on the interstate.  I am going to call the IN BMV to see if I can get a temp tag for in transit.  Any thoughts???

How far are you moving it? Might be less hassle and work to have a transport move it. We have a shed and out building company nearby that moves these things.

is it going to be empty?
is there a ID plate or something on the trailer?
and what type of hitch does it have?

if it was a 3500 dually i wouldnt hesitate, but 2500HD not so sure. if it was right down the road then again i wouldnt hesitate but 290 IDK. given those two things i would try and borrow a friends 3500. depending on that ball size would also it might be something like 3" which i dont think youll find a class hitch for that. since its also single axle it might have a lot of tongue weight and that would be a main concern for me

I’m sure your DMV websites will have the information but on this side of the creek you used to be able to make a one time tow just by hanging a sign stating “in tow” on the back of the towed vehicle.

So, if it's 8 feet wide, then that makes it easier.

i had to move a mobile home about 3 yrs ago, however this one was 16' feet wide so we called the pros.

i'm sure what to do about permits if necessary/not necessary.

i would be most concerned about the wheels ( and possibly bearings).   Being that it's 30' feet long, it shouldn't be super heavy (?) so the 2500 should be able to handle it.

Things I would do is
Find out what size ball it is
Replace tires
And drive to scales
The last two could be swapped if the scales are close and the tires are in somewhat ok shape.

I've never towed a single axle trailer, but since it's a single axle it shouldn't be too heavy due to the axle rating. BUT that axle is a good ways back from the center so your hitch might be getting more weight than it's rated for. Something else to try is just set the trailer down on the hitch and see how bad it squats your truck.

I've hauled some heavy loads with the crew cab to the dump with no issues. It's been years but want to say I've hauled a trailer that weighed 7k but it was dual axle so it wasn't too much hitch weight

I have a quote for a guy to move it.  He will use his tires and lights and for $500 he said he can move it for me.  I am going that route if it doesn't sell first.  Thanks guys.

whats he using to move it? 500 seams like a good price once you equate the price for the tires and gas. after all youre only going to use the tires once and your waisting money on them for a one time use thing
