1406 Help new user
« on: December 14, 2006, 06:44:00 PM »
Hey everyone this is my first time logging in to this site. I have been a member of chevytruckworld for along time and just found this site and Love these forumn's. I know there are alot of other post about the 1406 edelbrock on a stock 350 and I have read them. I have not been able to get my 1406 to even idle good. When I rev it up it backfire's and fights me. I have used wd 40 to check for vacuum leaks and found none and I have made sure my vacuum advance is on the time port but plugging the vac line and it didn't drop idle at all. Would this be my esc messing with the timing or what? I have a performer intake that I am going to instal in 2 weeks after christmas. Hopefully that helps. I wanna start driving my truck agian!!

So ever since you put the carb on it backfires and idles poor? Is this a NEW carburetor or a used one?

I have read so many different things. I have a new distributer to install with the manifold so I can take out all the computer controlled stuff but I have read another post from a guy who has a 75 model that does the same thing and thats definatley not computer controlled.

Did you plug the vacuum port in the back of the carb?

Yes I plugged it with the plug that came with it. I sprayed wd40 everywhere while it was running with no change in rpm.

It sounds like a vacuum tap port. May be you should post some pics

I will grab the camera from the office tommorow but I already bought the pipe plug's for it. I am pretty sure it's not needed. Now I trying to figure out how to cap the small pipe's coming from the exhuast and the one's from the charcoal canister.

I'd tear the carb down completely and check EVERY setting there is.  I've had 4 1406's and everyone was way off on almost every setting there is.  So now when I get one I tear it down completely first thing. but they are great when set up right.

If you don't have it, Here's the Install Manual: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/misc/tech_center/install/1000/1406.pdf

And Here's the Owners/Tuning Manual
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/misc/tech_center/install/1000/1406_manual.pdf

Good luck!

Wow, whatever happened to their claims of "runs great right out of the box, no tuning required"??

There's no such carburetor in existence  :D

It must depend on where the carbs are sent or who at the parts store was tinkering with them, because I bought 2 in the past 6 months and installed one on my dads 79 big ten (Jasper 350) and one on my 74 (69 Vette 355) and they both fired right up.

added-> they do need to be fine tuned for lean/rich and idle, but you have to remember that these carbs are made for a WIDE variety of applications. As long as you have your timing set within range after you bolt it up, you should just have to take a flathead screwdriver and fine tune it to where you want it.

well, it kinda sounds to me like it might not even be a fuel issue.  i think it's spark related.  i'm not exactly sure how to properly bypass the ESC system (never had to myself) but i think you need to do that.  also, is your distributor hold-down clamp loose?  is it possible that your distributor could be off a tooth (maybe you've recently had it out or the clamp was loose enough to allow it to jump)...what about your timing chain...how fresh is it?  it could have enough slack to cause your issue...i don't really think it's carb related myself...i mean, it COULD be i just think your timing might be off...

The only carb that is truely "runs great right out of the box" on a consistent basis, is a Predator 6000, the PXP anyway..the PXI is the street version (has an idle circuit) Though, you won't feel its true advantage without the proper manifold, and if its going on too small or too large a motor, it wont perform its best, but it will run ok..It should have a bigger metering cam put in for a more demanding engine, or a leaner fuel bar put in to lean it out for anything smaller than a 350..Its bass ackwards from normal carbs, in that it provides significantly more low end torque on a single plane high rise+ a 1" spacer, or a tunnel ram than it does on a dual plane manifold.

Sorry to ramble off topic, I even enjoy talking about Predator carbs..just wish they weren't so hard to find/expensive.  :(
